Tim Ernst has been writing in his journal about having lots of bear trouble at his cabin lately (Cave Mountain area). We've never seen one in all the years we've been going to Arkansas, though. There have been some around our cabin in years past, according to our neighbor. I hope we never see one. To tell the truth, I'd have been happy if they'd never brought them back.
I don't know how much I would trust pepper spray. If the wind is blowing the wrong way you may get it worse than the bear. But it's better than nothing. I think I like the BIG gun better..

If you google, "Arkansas mountain lion attacks", there is a site, and I haven't read it for awhile, that gives dates and details of attacks, the last documented one IIRC, was after 2000, and Game & Fish blamed it on the family dogs, even though it had textbook mountain lion signature.

Other than tracks, the closest I have come to verifying (like tracks aren't enough), was last year when somebody in the extended neighborhood was said to have shot a female.

I was told that this person puts their cooking grease in a container on the back porch to cool, and looked out and saw this female eating it.

The woman then got a rifle, went out the front door, tiptoed around the side, and shot the mountain lion.

To keep G & F out of this, anybody that knows the name won't say it, but a couple of people assured me it happened.

Here..I'll borrow ya my googlefinger:

Mountain Lion Attacks from 2001 to Now

May 3rd, 2003...and also note the november entry for a neighbor of the victim.

WRT to the 40+ y/o thing, my FIL says he saw one when he was a kid in Yell County and my mom used to tell stories about hearing them in Newton Co. I've met several old timers who tell similar stories.

Thanks for that link!

Sounds to me like that Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) official, Jay Hagans is a lazy SOB milking his public servant position like it was some kind of state welfare job with no responsibility. We've given the state GFC people too much power with not enough oversight.

Probender is on a distinguished road
When I lived in South Arkansas I was told by a game warden there were around 15 mountian lions that consistantly moved from the White River area in East Ark to the Ouachita reserve area in south Arkansas.
My son and I heard something sceam like a baby one morning on our way out to our deer stands that spooked both of us out.
Later on that week a man who was hunting in that area told me he had two Mt Lions (Some call them panthers) in his sight from his tree stand. This was a man I knew very well who would have had no reason to lie about seeing them.
I saw two brown bear when I lived in SE Arkansas plus many tracks. I believe most of them lived around Seven Devils Swamp.
