There's a good one in a safer neighborhood in LR on Rodney Parham near Reservoir as well.
|
Super Taqueria. It closed! Much to my dismay...it was the only one close to my office.
El Dorado IS good. It's my second favorite TexMex type place, after Hacienda. And closer to my house. And they've got a GREAT tequila selection. One I've been meaning to try is Cotijas, but they're only open for weekday lunch, and it's downtown while I work in WLR. But best of all I like the taquerias in SWLR and NLR.
I second (or third?) Sims bbq. And don't be intimidated by their location on 33rd...it's just a few blocks from me and I promise they'll be happy to see you. (There are also locations on Geyer Springs and on Barrow, if you're not downtown.)
U.S. Pizza would be my recommendation for, um, pizza...good food and lots of locations. I love their salads. We mostly eat at Vino's, though; it's close to the house and has good beer and music.
Me, I mostly live on Mexican and sushi. And sushi places are spring up all over these days, which makes me a very happy girl! Gina's in WLR, Sushi Cafe in midtown, and Hanaroo downtown are all good.

Where to eat in Central Arkansas
We had a thread go a little off track, so I'm moving some posts around...this is a great thread!
This was posted by openminded
I grew up in NLR and I think you are safe anywhere in that area, even the Camp Robinson area, and most areas in LR. Even though you didn't ask I thought I would share with you a few places you should eat while there -
US Pizza
Senor Tequilas (Mexican)
Whole Hog Cafe
Community Bakery
Those are my must haves when I am visiting. I would also stop to check out the Old Mill, the Central HS Museum & the LR Nine memorial at the capital, and the Farmers Market downtown.
Have a good time!

I would have called and complained and gotten another freebie but I figure there are enough decent pizza joints that I don't need to help them fix their issues.

Ah, I see. I haven't been to the one on Maumelle but I've been to the one on McCain about 4 or 5 times. I'm deciding on whether to make a trip up there now...I'm pretty hungry.

Ruh-roh...that's the problem with starting a new thread - it posts everything in chronological order...this came off the Visiting Little Rock thread...my post should have been first, but the software resorted the posts according to time posted....sorry 'bout that!

Never understood why people call it 'Central Arkansas' instead of just Little Rock. Nobody says 'Central Tennessee', in place of Nashville, or 'Central Oklahoma'... well...anyways...
just a pet peeve....
For pizza, I always liked Old World (O.W. now?). Also, Shotgun Dan's, Iriana's, and U.S. Pizza.
Little Rock's not a hamburger mecca, but The Hop on Cantrell was good.
Again, not a BBQ aficionado, but Sim's was my favorite down there. Some of my friends thought it was gross (?), and they had a stereotype about it.
Other than that, nothing stands out as spectacular. There was a place in Beebe, some sort of out-in-the-country hot-wing shack. It was really good.

Sims was my favorite BBQ until I moved to the Memphis area. It is the closest to Memphis style in Little Rock. I ate at the Whole Hog on Cantrell since the day they opened because it was the closest BBQ place to the Alltel campus.
For pizza, Vino's is the one. That was the place to go when I worked at BCBS.
Other places not mentioned in this thread:
The Faded Rose - I love the red beans and rice as well as the jambalaya. We still try to stop by and eat even when passing through LR.
Buffalo Grill - The original one near Alltel.
Purple Cow - Decent burger but their peanut butter malt is unbelievable.

Having moved here from Memphis (where folks actually know how to cook bbq), I found Sims rather gross. That thin, mustardy sauce is just plain yuck. (Robert, I'd be interested in knowing where you came across anything like that in Memphis.) Quite honestly, there's not much good bbq in Central Arkansas. Whole Hog, which is much more Memphis, is probably the best around here. There's a place on 65 in Greenbrier that's good, too.
Now, where Central Arkansas gets it right is catfish. The catfish over here is out of this world. I love Grampa's, **** of the Walk, Catfish City, and Payton Creek on Hwy 64 outside Conway. All are excellent.
BTW, it's 'Central Arkansas' because we're referring to more than just Little Rock proper. And yes, in Tennessee, there are frequent references to 'Middle Tennessee' to refer to Nashville and the many counties surrounding it.
Edited to add: Apparently, you can't use the word '****' on this forum.

I never heard that about Tennessee, but I'll take your word for it.
In almost all the other metro areas I can think of, the name of the hub city is often used to describe the whole region, not just city proper. This is true especially when they're trying to describe to outsiders where they live.
If I grew up far away from Arkansas (wishful thinking), I wouldn't have a clue what 'central Arkansas' was, what towns were in it, or what significance it has. However, if you told me 'Little Rock', that would conjure up some grade school class memories in which I heard it was the capital of the state, and also some sort of major city there. To outsiders, 'central Arkansas' means little, if anything.
