Well I was born in Fort Smith but the only thing really holding me here is school. I live on the Northside of town and it's not so bad, I wouldn't want to live on the Southside, just my preference.
I didn't choose the place and my family was just to poor to do things like take vacations so I didn't see a lot of the world. These days with all my training I could probably get a job anywhere and I'm about ready for something different.
But the factorys are shutting down and they are building dorms so you can't really say there is no movement in FS. It's sad that those people had to lose there jobs but most factory jobs are really more a way to survive than a way to get ahead. I hear some people talk about how Whirlpool was such a gravytrain and how much they used to get away with. Well gee, I wonder why they would move it to Mexico. Whirlpool never did me any good anyways, everybody in Fort Smith knew you had to be related to somebody to get on out there anyways.
Well personally I'm about ready to see more of the world either way.

Go for it and see more of the world. Evenyone should explore the horizon, whether vacation traveling or re-locating.

I worked at Whirlpool during my first two years of college. I am sooo happy to see those union-loving people who I worked with losing their jobs. They could barely write their name and exepected to get paid over $15 an hour in Fort Smith with benefits better than most professionals in the city. They got what they had coming to them. Those union workers were some of the laziest whine-bags I have ever met in my life.

Well, I just got done reading these posts as I'm on an experimental/curiosity trip in December: OKC-Tulsa-Ft.Smith-Shreveport-Houston-Dallas. My first trip in the U.S. with no rental car, and being reliant on bus and trains only.
Ft. Smith? Why not! I just love going to off-beat places that tourists never speak of, or if they do, it's done disdainfully.
The way I travel is I bring books along, just in case I'm somewhere where there's nothing much of interest in that particular city, or I'm caught there on a day the weather is rainy or gloomy. So I'll read the day away if it's that bad. But I seem to find any city interesting enough.
From what I've read on this post, I'm not deterred and I'm looking forward to my visist. Just need to find a half-way decent motel close to downtown that's not very expensive.
Until then....................

Well I will say one good thing about Fort Smith. It is better than being at a Greyhound bus station.

If you use Razorback cab make sure you count your change before you get out of the car. If you do catch them then you won't be obligated to leave a tip.
There is a Days Inn and a Howard Johnson within walking distance of the bus station.
Fort Smith has a public transit bus system but I've never had to use it.

There are a couple of motels within eyeshot of the bus station just north of Garrison (South of the station). They aren't anything nice, but they are cheap.
There are also a couple of nice motels a few blocks south of Garrison & the station (Holiday Inn and Marriott). They are nice, but will cost you more than you probably want to spend.
Either way, you shouldn't get robbed or killed at either. Good luck and have fun.
BTW, if you run out of reading material, there is a nice used book store (called Book Ends) a few blocks south of the station on Garrison. I think is is on the corner of 9th or 10th Street.

Good ol Kahn: I tried to rep you, but I must have repped you yesterday.
Yes, I was looking at Days Inn on the Hotel sites, it has received some pretty good reviews. But I'll check out the Howard Johnson as well. Glad to know there are cheaper lodgings in the inner city, close to the bus station, as I haven't found that to be the case in Tulsa. Only expensive hotels in downtown.
And the idea of a used bookstore downtown, I already know I'll not get bored there. And I love jouneying to overlooked cities that are off the tourist circuit and finding overlooked gems, which I seem to find in any city. The people you encounter make such a difference anywhere.
I've only been to Little Rock. But I remember one night I went to a bar, the bartender found out where I lived, and introduced me to everyone in the bar!
That's never happened anywhere else in this country! Must be that Southern hospitality they talk about.
Looking forward to my visit. Thanks for the information.

Those were the cheaper motels I was referring to.
