Hurricane Ike
I heard that Ike moved through Arkansas and I hope that everyone there is okay and it didn't do too much damage.

They are inching the floodgates open at Beaver Lake trying to keep the water level from going over flood stage. There were numerous trees downed early Saturday morning, and some minor flooding in Northwest Arkansas. I think there may still be a few people without power, but overall it was not too bad.

Pretty much the damage was minor, like DC said. We had a few broken tree limbs, lots of water (Sat night, early S morning it poured down) and of course leaves everywhere, but nothing serious...

The damage in the Mount Ida area was minimal but riding out the storm was terrifying! The winds were horrible and the gusts even worse! I thought the roof was coming off the house many times. But thank goodness we made it through and have electriciy, which some do not. Lots of trees down on power lines.

We took one on the chin on this hill. Wind speeds were clocked at 76mph.
No power or phone for 2 days, we just got going this A.M.
I lost some trees, and fridge contents, but a neighbor brought over a 10kw generator and got me going on that (OK...OK...I can hear it just like my neighbors..."No generator?....Tell me yer jokin'. )
I'm gettin' round to it.
Took off Sunday to assess damage @9:00 A.M., which began a long procession of area folks, doing the same, meeting up on the road, and we'd all just shut off our trucks and talk.
I had one mile of fence to check, and I got that done by 2:00 P.M.
About 20 feet at a time before meeting someone else on the road.

Ike didn't bother us much where I am in LA. We lost power for 2 days with Gustav, but didn't lose anything in the freezer, just kept it closed and everything came out ok, was just starting to thaw a little.
I don't have a generator either, Rog. But that's not in my budget. We usually get our electricity back pretty quickly in my neck of the woods, for some reason. If I had a gas stove, power failures wouldn't bother me much, except for heating or cooling. I have a gas water heater and we almost never lose gas and water even when the power is out. My stove came with the house, but when it's gone, I'm getting gas....always hated electric stoves anyway. My mom lives in a town about 20 minutes from here, and she never lost her power during Gustav, so we were able to stay with her to cook and stay cool after the first night. After the winds died down, it got hot! I thought a lot about the people in south LA who didn't have power for about a week....it's even hotter down there.

We live in Little Rock and we lost power for 4 days after Gustav and this is day 3 without power following Ike. We are not very happy.
During my 9 years in Boston we lived through one dying Cat. 1 hurricane, numerous Nor'easters (the North Atlantic's version of a tropical storm) and quite a few 12-16+ inch snowfalls (in one day) and we lost power a grand total of 4 times. Only one of those times was weather related.
Did not like Boston very much, but really did love a well designed infrastructure where utilities are at least sometimes held accountable for their past decisions.
