Hope you get the picture up soon, Rog. I love looking at pictures of Arkansas anytime, anywhere. Except for the delta. Seen enough of that. I suppose it has its own beauty, but nearly 50 years of flat land is enough for me. One advantage, though, is that it is easier to get from Point A to Point B than it is in the Ozarks! But then again, the slower life is one of the things that makes me love the Ozarks.
Sam I Am posted some picture posting instructions on the pictures thread once, and when I followed them, I got it to work. I found the post and copied her instructions here:
MODERATOR: here's a link on how to do pictures..scirocco22 is another moderator and very good at explaining.
http://www.city-data.com/forum/814124-post3.html
Basically, if you have a picture on your computer you just start a post and at the bottom of it there will be a button to click to "go advanced" or something like that...click that, and type your message, then scroll down some...you will see "manage attachments" (or something like that) ... click that, find the folder with the picture, click the picture and hit "upload". It will take just a few seconds...there's a little green bar on the top left, I think, that tells you when it has uploaded. Then you just close that box and hit the post button and it should go in just fine...but read scirocco's instructions, he's MUCH better than I am at getting a point across.
Clay Lady....my husband, brother, and son have canoed the Mulberry, but I haven't had a chance to yet. I will someday. Although I would rather do it in one of the large rafts, so I wouldn't have to do so much work and have less of a chance of turning over!

I'll try again, I've posted pictures before, and I went back through the instructions and don't know what the glitch is. It looked like it uploaded fine, said it was attached, but didn't make it...twice.
I had even resized it to 1600 X 1200 to make sure it didn't exceed the parameters, so..I dunno.
Gotta go to Thayer on a sin run right now, I'll give it a shot again tomorrow.

Btw, to the people who have requested to be "friends" with me....I don't even know what that means, so I'm going to have to do some studyin' up on it. I'm not ignoring you. It took me the longest time after I started coming here to even notice all the "goin's on" in that little box.

Well I would assume that people would ask you to be on their friend list simply because they like talking with you on this here forum and/or they like what you stand for on issues or some such reason. I think it would mostly mean that someone respects you enough to want to be your friend in this forum. I wouldn't except anyone on my list unless I "knew" them from the forum and I have taken a good look at their profile page, but I am a bit more cautious than most. It has taken me a while to figure out all these different things. I could not figure out who was giving me 'reps" for the longest lol...I never paid attention to the "little box"!

We haven't done any fishing yet, but our neighbor has said that he has a great spot on his creek that we can fish on (he is the nicest guy). We just haven't taken the time to do it yet. And of course, there's always the Mulberry. We just don't fish any more, but we used to and I liked it. We would have to get a lot of new stuff and do some work on our old fishing rods!
Nomadicus, do you already have a place, too, and what general area?
I just love our place in Arkansas...if my mom ever had to sell it, I don't know how I would be able to stand it (I can't afford to buy it!). I sure would love to be up there now and see the leaves....Mama said she talked to a lady in Ozark day before yesterday, and she said they are just unbelievable. *sigh* I've only been able to be up there once when the fall foliage was pretty, and it was a real experience. There is almost a magical feeling to the land in some places up there, and not just in the fall, but all year 'round.

Just a quick answer for now, cuz I gotta get back to work. I've already bought a place in Horseshoe Bend in July. I'll be movin' as soon as I'm sixty two, which will happen in Feb. '10.
A couple of pics of the house: (Rog. these are already on the web. I use the insert icon and then paste the link.)

luvarkansas, whereabouts do you and your family normally live when not braving the wilds of Hwy 23 N? That's a wonderful place to own a house, IMHO (in my humble opinion). I used to work for the Corp of Engineers there in Ozark.
Tell you a little story that happened to me while I was there. My friend Joe's wife and my wife was out of town at the same time, so we decided to go on a trip to a swimming hole on the Mulberry that he knew about. We took an ice chest full of beer in his station wagon and got there around noon. The water was clear and slow moving. We splashed around awhile until we wore ourselves out then settled on the opposite bank on a rocky outcrop to relax with a beer.
Shortly, a car rolled up and all four doors opened. Out poped four young giggling girls ready to play in the water. Joe and I kept quiet and for the moment they seemed content to ignore us. We just relaxed and enjoyed the simple entertainment of slowly getting to know these young ladies through watching their antics.
Suddenly an old pickup rolled up and a slightly rotund, semi bald, middle aged man in overalls got out. He walked up to the girls, who by this time were splashing around in the water, and introduced himself. Then he started carrying on about how this was his property from the cross roads on top of the hill to the fence post down that road with the can on top of it. Bla, bla, bla and he was carrying on in a loud voice when Joe elbowed me and said, "We gotta go!"
"Huh?"
"Now! We gotta go!" And with that, he jumped in and swam back to the other side, so I followed.
As I walked out onto the sandy part on the other side, I noticed Joe was hurrying to get his car backed up to the ice chest so he could load it. In the meantime, I stood there and watched the guy in overalls. As soon as he saw me standing there, he walked on over and started talking to me without even pausing to take a breath.
"Hello. My name is McElroy, Tom McElroy. I own this property from the crossroads on top of the hill all the way down that road to the fencepost with the can on top of it. I fell off of the bay bridge in San Francisco. Have you ever been to San Francisco? Anyway, I fell off of the bay bridge and almost died. They had to drill three holes in my head to save me, right here, here and here." he said pointing with his finger to a place to the right of his crown. "Here, feel of that right there!" stepping toward me.
"No, that's alright." I said stepping back.
About that time Joe had the ice chest thrown into the back of his car and was grabbing my arm. "Come on. We gotta go." So, I got in.
As he drove away, Joe told me that Tom McElroy had been arrested several times for killing people tresspassing on his property, but always got out by saying he was crazy.
I was floored! Never heard of him before or since, but I'll never forget that name. "Hello! My name is McElroy, Tom McElroy."

LOL I've met some McElroys, but they seemed like nice people. Don't remember if the man's name was Tom or not. I could ask my mom, and my cabin neighbor. But I have learned that there are some real characters in them thar hills! Most of the time all you have to do is smile and be friendly and they'll be friendly right back.
I live in Louisiana. Wish I didn't, but I was born and raised here, family all here, job's here, etc.
My husband worked for the Corp about 5 years ago! He is a teacher, and he got a summer ranger job, just in time to make a good chunk of money for a down payment on a house (which we didn't know, at the time, was about to come up for sale ....God provides). The job has never come open again, but ever since then he's had it in the back of his mind that maybe he could work for the Corp in Ozark after he retires from teaching (He'll only be 57). We have a friend who also works for the Corp in Minden, LA. That's who let us know about the summer ranger job that time. My husband was actually offered a full-time position after that summer job, but he had too much retirement invested in teaching to quit. I think he has about 5 years left now. He could take his 20-year retirement now, but the kids are still with us, and wouldn't stand for moving off right now and leaving their friends, so he might as well go the full time and get more money.
How did you like working for the Corp in Ozark?
Oh, and your place is great! Much nicer than Mama's cabin, which is really just a little shack, but we like to romanticize it. LOL It meets our needs, though, and it's in a quiet spot. We love it.

Oh, that incident happened in 1975. Tom might be around still, but I'll bet he's not scaring anyone these days.
I used to live in Minden, LA too. Small world, ain't it? That was back when I was in grade school, though. I still have a friend there. His name is Charles Wayne Wiley. He used to manage the airport, but the city messed that up.
While I was in Ozark, I was a Power Plant Electrician Trainee for Ozark Lock and Dam. In 1976 I transferred to Table Rock Dam in Branson, MO. I loved the Corp, but eventually I got bored. I left to go back to college. This time I chose University of Central Arkansas at Conway. It's a great school! I loved it. I had a brother that was already enrolled.
Thanks! I don't have a stick of furniture in it yet, but all in due time. I'm bursting at the seams to get moving.
I'll bet you're a teacher also. Am I wrong?

Yep, Tom is still around (asked my mom last night...she was just pulling up to the cabin when I talked to her! Wish I were with her.) He's about in his 80s now. He actually stopped by and visited my mom outside her cabin one day when she first bought it, and she has told me about it, and I thought that he might be the guy you were talking about! She said he told her about the holes in his head, too, and he also told her that people think he's crazy and that he shoots at people that come on his land, but that they have him mixed up with some guy that's dead and buried in the cemetery. LOL He said he guessed the holes in his head was why everybody thought he was crazy. She said he didn't seem dangerous at all, just a little eccentric. She has shown me where his place is....there is a low-water bridge you have to cross to get to his place. We drove out on the bridge one day to look at the creek, and turned around right on the other side....didn't get shot at. And he hasn't shot anyone since Mama bought the cabin, or we would have heard about it from our neighbor, who knows all about what goes on in that neck of the woods.
No, I'm not a teacher, I'm just a smart-aleck. But I have homeschooled my kids all their lives....my son just graduated this past May (made a 28 on his ACT, first and only try ) and my daughter is still in the 9th grade.
Anyway, I just wanted to give poor old Tom's side of the story. LOL
