To Philfrost:

Sorry to pre-empt you a bit, but not everybody in Conway is like that -- Hendrix College...the Berkeley (or at the Swathmore [sp?]) of Arkansas is here - anything more need saying?

As for other areas, Eureka Springs (50 miles NE of Fayetteville) is COMPLETELY out of step with the rest of the state. It's semi-official motto is "Where the Misfits Fit!". What does that tell you about the town <grins>

Wow, I don't want to visit where ever Ravenasque is living. Maybe he should have limmited his opinion to his area. My husband and I are not from this area either. Everyone knows it, and no one cares. My husband is from Colorado (where the other half of the Californians went, laugh out loud). I am from Ohio. Now we live in NW Arkansas (where many other Californians have and are moving to.) I think this place is a geat place to be, if I didn't I would move. I don't have any reasons that would keep me from moving if I wanted to. There are many of the chain resturants and stores here. Rogers is where I would sugest you look. Since you want to be on or near the water. Eureka Springs would be another place, but if you want to get away from the type of thinking CA is known for then you may not like Eureka Springs. I sugest you take a look anyway. There are many things to do here also. Boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, gambling(not far from here across the OK line); you can even dig for jewels, pan for gold. Maybe caves are your thing. My Husband and I have become a real estate team here. I hope this helps.

Default I was born in Arkansas and lived there for 27 years...

...I resided in Fort Smith, Arkansas, but have been ALL over. If you ask me the nicest places to live are going to be Northwest Arkansas. Fort Smith, is considered North West, and it is a nice city, the 2nd biggest in Arkansas, but there is a major growing meth problem there and people are getting dumber and dumber.
I love Harrison and Eureka Springs. They are both small communities, but have alot to offer.
Fayetteville area is nice, but expensive due to it being a college town.

Default wtl

I disagre with harrison, it is a closed comunity.
People are not very friendly in harrison.
If you go just north to branson you will find you fit in no mater who you are.
eurika springs is very excpting also, espically if you are a bush hater.
It is not uncomon there to find a pile of dogdo with a bush flag in it.

Default Harrison area

Tom, if you want the small town feel with some of the life style of a bigger town Harrison is for you. We are only 30 minutes or less from Branson Mo.(everyone knows where branson is ) with all the four lane divided highway improvements to the north, and yes highway 412 to Fayettville is being expanded to 4 lanes in places to start. If you look at any growth charts for Harrison it has grown at a steady pace for a long time. If you could get your hands on a growth forecast done by Wal-Mart, I'm told it predicts Harrison to see some major growth spurts over the next few years with the over flow of the Fayetteville-Springdale area. It says the people who moved to that area in the first place for the small town fell will leave and move to what they call bedroom towns like Harrison to regain that fell. I have lived here all my life and I have never seen this town grow like it has the last ten years.

We want to move to Greers Ferry or Eureka Springs. Lately there has been a lot of news about Eureka Springs and the gay movement there and the Hell's Angel stabbing. Greers Ferry looks beautiful but appears to shut down in the winter. Can anyone tell me their thoughts on which one to move to. We are in our 50's and like the idea of a slow life.

Both are tourist/travel destinations where the traffic is impressive during season. Much depends on what you want in a town...what DO you want? GF is not going to have the funky, artistic flair to it that ES does. ES pretty much closes down in a lot of ways during the colder winter months (Jan., Feb.), but it's a neat place to be at Christmastime.

That the football players wouldn't shake hands isn't really a player in this article - that happens with kids of like race all the time who haven't learned how to play well with others....but I think the observation that "haters are a largely mute group" is correct....I will stand corrected on Harrison's problems - as with Nita, I would hope the pastors and 5 years have healed some of the problems, but those football players from Ramay will never forget - and that is sad, and the entire population of Harrison should have offered up an apology for that one...you gotta wonder, where ARE the parents? Are they the ones spewing hatred? If so - kids learn what they live - and the cycle goes on. I'm not sure how it gets broken, but it is a very sad thing to have had happen since 1957 here. My very, very belated apologies to the youth of Ramay....gotta wonder what would happen today if Junior in the white sheet pulled that stunt. In my mind, that's a hate crime - he's inciting fear and violence....

Although I regret you had to post this, it is informative.....and let us pray it is in the past.

I have lived in Harrison for 15 years. I remember the story about the football players that would not shake the hands of the opposing team. Now, as Paul Harvey would say, Here's the rest of the story. The "offended" team members had their hands in their pants gropping themselves. Some of the Harrison boys refused to touch their hands. Do you blame them? I DON'T. The Harrison team played and still plays teams with black kids and have not refused to shake any other hands. It is another case of the whole story was not told. The McDonalds incident I don't know about. If it did happen it was wrong.
Why should we apologize for something that happened nearly a 100 years ago? Gee I wonder if in the 2100's some Islamic people will apologize to America for killing over 3000 people on 9/11? Doubt it.

Yes there are prejudice white people here, but I am originally from the Pine Bluff area and guess what? There are prejudice black people there.

I have never heard of the "sundown" rule. I do know this, if it is after sundown in Pine Bluff this lady will not be there.

Get over it.
