Have you moved yet?
I am just wondering if you have chosen a place yet? Or have you decided to live in California anyway?
I am from California myself. But I have been here for 10 years. The first couple of years how I yearned for home. lol But to me this is home. I didn't even realize how much so until I went to California this past month to visit. While I loved visiting my dad and seeing the great REDWOODS .... not to mention the Pismo Beach! grins I was so very glad to get back home. It is calmer here. California apart from being so high priced is so fast paced. Not to mention dirty. It's fall fashion colors are brown and brown.. actually that seems to be Californias natural color... lol Out here the seasons are how I remember them as a child. There is actually 4 of them! It's fall here and looking out my window I still feel as if God hand painted this just for me. IT is green here year round... maybe a dry spell in July... but almost always green. Wild flowers grow everywhere... and anywhere. Wild onions just pop up in your yard ... or wildflowers. Not to mention deer and other various wildlife... It short it's peaceful here.
I read with some regret the responses Ravenasque about living here. I could say that is because he is from SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA... but I won't grins.
Here is what I know. Life is much slower here. But there are bigger cities here that should make you comfortable. Try Hot Springs, Little Rock, Conway and the like... It will take some getting used too, the slower pace. But it is so worth it.
Yes there is alot of Churches here and a zillion people that go to them. I do not go to church. I have had some over zealous people try to persuade me to their way of thinking. Don't get me wrong I believe in god. I have my own reasons for not going to church. I look at it this way, they are so uplifted by what is happening in their lives that they want to share it with me. At times I go to a special church function with them as I would a friend in california. Then return to my own way of life.
As for people being friendly or unfriendly I have had both experiences. BUT it is no different than California. In California I didn't really know my neighbors. Hell we were afraid to get to know them to much, who knew if you would get caught in cross fire or a drive by?? right? Out here I know all my neighbors. I know even the cranky ones who look at me as a intruder from that fast and loose state! giggles
A 16 mile drive to a bigger town to get groceries is a great drive for me. You can always shop at the little local markets, but most choose to go to the bigger places for variety. I like living in a small town... (not calif. small... but real SMALL) I can drive 15 or 20 miles to the faster places or I can walk among the trees and enjoy the peace and quiet. I can sit by a stream and watch the fish jump out of the water.
You don't mention your age. I guess that would depend where you would want to live. IF you have kids move them here. it's safer...

I don't, the reasons being what I said above, AR doesn't give you a lot of options, while it is a pretty lax state (nearly everything is legal here, automatic guns knives, ect.) there is also some very dumb things, such as many counties are dry (absolutely no alcohol sold at all) and that you cannot buy ANY alcohol on Sundays. (I blame it on too much Christian influence ) I cannot seem to keep myself busy living here, I get extremely bored from a lack of stimulation. (not much goes on here)
I had only visited this state a few times on vacation before I had to move here, and when I did, I disliked it then. But I had no choice. If I was you, I would look into other options, or at least vacation here for a few weeks ahead of time. Get to see how you like it for yourself. I would especially look into employment & housing before actually deciding to move, because just coming out here hoping to find something is a very foolish move, because you won't find many options. A few 'good' places here to try would be Hot Springs, Fayetteville, Fort Smith or Pine Bluff. They are the more notable cities here.
Good luck.

You have a problem with Arkansas' Taxes. Arkansas is the cheapest Taxed state in the country. And as far as living heres something for your brain to chew on. WE ARENT LIKE California NOR do we Want to be. Sure ppl in Arkansas may not make as much money as Californians but the cost of living is ALOT Cheaper. I moved to Dallas and later Austin. And you know what Im glad i was raised in Arkansas we have better core values. We dont need large amounts of money to be rich. Like Trace Atkins said people in small towns are richer than wealthy people in large towns because we dont compete with each other to have the newest BMWs and Mercedes and biggest houses. Moderator cut: explain your thoughts, no generalizations please yea the jobs may not pay as much because the cost of living isnt nearly as high but heres another thing you might want to consider, you may consider it poor but most rural people see it as comfortable because they have enought to make a living and live fairly comfortably. most rural people dont know they make less than city people or states where cost of living is higher because we dont have to have big house, and fancy cars Moderator cut: personal attack

Bella Vista sounds like a place you should explore...we have found Bella Vista to be a great place to live...the area south of Bella Vista is growing like a weed...plenty of shopping, plays, and the U of A provides plenty of SEC action.

We are interested in finding a Baptist Church to attend. One that has couples with children around my age. It doesn't have to be a large church where I can't get to know everyone, but I would like to find one where my children look forward to going to worship the lord and meet other children.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

I live about 20 minutes north of Rogers. My husband and I are both originally from this area and we love it here! We are also in our early 30's and have an 11, 9, and 5 year old. We attend Immanuel Baptist Church in Rogers, which runs between 300-400 on Sundays. It has a great AWANAS program! If you check out this area, come visit us, our Sunday School class has around 10 to 12 couples that are mostly all 30-something. Our children attend a Christian school, so I can't give you much first hand info on the public schools, except that they were good when my husband and I went there. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants. We are less than 2 hours to Branson, and just minutes away from Beaver Lake. One of the down sides to living here I guess would be the growing pains we are experiencing. Especially with the roads. Also, land prices tend to be high. I hope this has helped you a little. Good luck on your move!

I just want to live in a nice area so my three kids will be in a good neighborhood and school. I have one son that will be in 5th grade, a daughter 6th grade and oldest son will be in the 9th grade.
This is going to be hopefully my last assignment before I retire. If you have any advice please share it with me. Thanks

My husband, daughter and I may be relocating to Jonesboro in October. Our final military move... my husband is retiring. We are looking at schools and such as well. A great resource to check out schools is greatschools.net (or .com). I am a teacher and have relocated several times as my husband and I have moved. I find this to be a wonderful resource. In the past I have used it to research schools before interviewing, but now I am a parent as well. You can research schools by district, or name, and find a great deal of useful information such as test scores, parent and teacher comments, diversity of a school, etc. Hope it helps!

I would like to live lakefront or riverfront and near some mountains. Im not too concerned about real eatate prices. Everything there seems reasonable to me. My wife nad I relocated to Bella Vista 3 years ago from Wisconsin....we love it here. We love the 4 seasons, low property taxes, the expanding ecconomy in Bentonville and Fayetteville. Beaver Lake is beautiful. Bella Vista lakes are nice. We have a pontoon on Loch Lomand and enjoy the privacy it allows.
I'm not too familiar with other parts of AR...but NWA is outstanding.

Consider Magnolia, Arkansas
Take a few minutes to google Magnolia, Arkansas. Check out the Chamber of Commerce web site. There you will find links to the public schools, the local university, complete demographic info and much more.
Major near by cities are Shreveport, LA and Texarkana, AR. Not too far from Little Rock and Monroe LA. Good links to Interstate 30 and Interstate 20 nearby.
Great University, New Hospital under construction, AMAZING home prices compaired to California.
Post what you are looking for in a home town. Maybe I can help. Haved lived and done business here 20 years.

Ravensque, I'm sorry you feel so bitter about AR. I'm from Las Vegas and have been in AR for little over 4 years now. Yes we have chiggers, nothing a little bleach won't take care of, and ticks, sprays work wonders. I travel back and forth from here to Vegas and I find the gas prices are so much cheaper here. I'm not that far from Texarkana that has just about anything one would need as far as stores. Housing is lots cheaper, neighbors friendly and always there to lend a hand if needed. Hot Springs has lots to do and the beauty of the state is awesome. Yes we have lots of deer, just drive more cautious like I do and never have come close to hitting one. The summers here are very humid and I don't like that one bit, but our summers are nicer than other places I've live in. What they call wind alerts for the lakes here is 10-25 mph. Nevada is much worse than that is. Smog, we don't have any where I'm at, just beautiful red sunsets. Our winters are so much milder than anyplace I've ever lived. Nice spring and fall weather too. I've seen snow 3 times since I've lived here and it was gone in a few hours. It's so nice to sit and watch the deer grazing out in our back fields, and see geese and ducks swimming in one of our ponds and watching that gorgeous red sunset every night. I feel so blessed to have moved here and get to see what the other part of the USA looks like, not just desert.
I hope you get to move soon to someplace that suits you. Everyone deserves to be happy. Good Luck to you.
