I am also a transplant from So Cal. I love Fayetteville! I've been here 11 years and most of my family have moved here too. I miss the ocean sometimes, and good baja Mexican food. But that's about it. I love friendly people, change in the seasons, lakes and rivers all over the place and land you can afford. We found plenty of job opportunity and we've been happy. Summers have some times that are hot sticky and buggy. And some points of winter are just sooo cold. But nothing in the way of weather last long in NWA. So just hang on and it will change!

Arkansas is a typical southern state if you like california and want a happy medium consider Austin , Dallas , Fort Worth , Even Gainesville Tx. I say this because a lot of california refugees have flocked there. It might not be such a culture shock. I myself am moving to Fort Smith in two weeks and personally like it there. Reason being i am a cdl driver and the demand is high for local work. not to mention family there. Take what you hear with a grain of salt. some parts are backwards some are not. As far as Hot Springs goes check out Hot Springs Village if you want a resort type enviornment. they have all the amnenities you need and not to far from Little Rock or the actual city of Hot Springs. I used to deliver to the number of golf courses in the Village and always said if was going to take a step in the direction "Country Club Living" that would be the place i would choose. People there arent as pretentious as other places ive had the pleasure of visiting.

I may be able to understand your views on Dallas or Austin but Gainesville, I would totally disagree. Gainesville would be much more like OK or Ar than anywhere near anything in Calif unless you are referring to a very small town in the middle part of the state.

Hot Springs Village and Bella Vista are thick with people from Calif that want to escape the crowds, high cost of living and many of the other problems plaqueing Calif right now. Of course Bella Vista is close to Fayetteville which is very diversified.

Hot Springs and the surrounding Ouchita Mountain area is the most scenic part of the state. My favorite places would either be that or Northeast Arkansas, the Jonesboro area in particular. Cali folks are abundant in AR these days- you won't be lonely!

Fayetteville is younger by virtue of the college and has a lot of free-thinkers. I don't think you would be disapppointed. I guess it is pretty much the same there as lots of places - you probably don't want to move in and make that your first statement to the new neighbors, but really....Fayetteville is full of transplants and is more progressive than some other parts of the state - it's beautiful and for the most part has a laissez faire attitude. Best thing is to spend a very long weekend there and catch the feel for yourself....are you considering the University for employment or do you have employment secured (or at least on the radar?) in your field? Moving to Arkansas is a great thing if you have employment or are retired, but the professional job market is stiff with competition - I'd be a whole lot more concerned about that than anything else regarding your lifestyle.

I have to agree with Sam, think this over awhile, check out the job market, spend a long weekend in the area.

Wow, it took me all morning to read this whole thread. I am very happy I did, because we are thinking of retiring to Fayetteville or a suburb arounding it in a year or 2.

Does anyone have a really good realtor that has been in the biz for at least 6-10 years? we are looking to spend no more then 250.000, could go higher but why? my husband does want a workshop, so we'll need a 3 car or a house with a lot big enough to build him a shop that would look like it goes with the house. Are there any builders doing that sort of thing there?

Debbie

MODERATOR: Sorry, realtor referrals are not allowed on the open board - if anyone has any info on that, please direct message Debbie - thank you!

Yes..i do currently have a executive position in line in the fayetteville area..i wanted to inquire as moving to a smaller city and being a lesbian family is a concern for my family..we have always lived in larger cities where this has never been an issue due to diversity of the city. I love the fayetteville area in general and just want to make sure that my family would be welcome..i know that anywhere you are there are individuals that will not be accepting, just dont want to be in a smaller city that is not accepting at all..from research it is my understanding that the fayetteville area is a very gay friendly area and has quite a bit of diveristy for a smaller city..input is greatly appreciated

Do you blame them? I DON'T. The Harrison team played and still plays teams with black kids and have not refused to shake any other hands. It is another case of the whole story was not told. The McDonalds incident I don't know about. If it did happen it was wrong.
Why should we apologize for something that happened nearly a 100 years ago? Gee I wonder if in the 2100's some Islamic people will apologize to America for killing over 3000 people on 9/11? Doubt it.

Yes there are prejudice white people here, but I am originally from the Pine Bluff area and guess what? There are prejudice black people there.

I have never heard of the "sundown" rule. I do know this, if it is after sundown in Pine Bluff this lady will not be there.

Get over it.
I had to weigh in on this, because it sounds exactly like what happened with the "Jena 6"....the national media jumped all over it, reported half-truths and lies, blew some details out of proportion, strung (that's a southern word, lol) unrelated events together, and made the whole thing sound like it was all about race when it wasn't. I know, because I am very close to that situation.

What you said is absolutely true.... there are prejudiced white people in the South, and also prejudiced black people. Very few actual militant white racists left, though (can't speak knowledgeably about militant black racists). Most of us in the South judge people by their actions and not their color.
