Default You are so right.

In the US--there are rednecks everywhere, there are racists everywhere, drugs are everywhere. I agree that this area is fairly religious. Churches are often a locus of activities in some communities in Arkansas. The more urban your location though, the less this matters.

You don't mention kids being a consideration. Schools become an issue then. My kids all went to public schools --all got high enough ACT/SAT scores to get college paid for--not necessarily because of the schools, but just saying....

I am from the Delta, now live in Central Arkansas and work in Little Rock. My county is dry, but LR has liquor stores, so this really isn't a problem. I love to take short lake trips to North Central Arkansas--Norfork Lake is wonderful. A beautiful area. As is the area of the Ouachita Mountains. Arkansas Lakes are wonderful for swimming, something you can't always say about lakes in the north. Lots of people have boats and spend weekends at the lake. Hiking is good, too.

Property values decrease dramatically in the more rural areas, but so does the likelihood of having high speed Internet and depending where you are, good cell signals.

Arkansas is my home, so obviously I can't be totally objective. Living in a nice home was one of my material goals in life. I have been able to do that, even though our household income is moderate. I enjoy gardening, I jump in the pool when I get too hot. So perhaps I am just easily contented, but I am happy here. I think attitude and outlook affect everything in life, including being happy about where you live.

I was wondering about Eureka Springs myself. I went there on vacation last year, and could definitely see myself snowbirding or retiring there. If one was not religious, they'd have no problems there either. It is quite artsy, gay friendly, literate etc.

I have family who live there. It is pretty, but it gets old quickly. You have a long drive for basic amenities and health care. A week there is fun; years there are not so much fun (for most).

What kind of basic amenities? It's not like they don't have stores. And a hospital. It might not be a large hospital, and you may end up traveling or being transported for specialist services, but Springfield, MO, and Benton County are not that far. Berryville is also close by.

I guess it is just a matter of preference. I don't want to travel 15 minutes to get to Walmart or a good hospital. I know many people who have left the Eureka Springs area (most elderly) because they were concerned about the drive for good medical care.
