Default You know you live in Arkansas when....

you're sitting at your desk, typing at the computer, and through the front door wanders a raccoon. Just happened, not five minutes ago.

When I lived there, I asked one of my employees what she and her family were doing that weekend. Her response was that she and her daughter were going to a goat sale and her husband was going coon hunting.

We have some *serious* coon hunting 'societies' around here.

I've let them hunt my place several times.

I get real tired of trying to keep them out of the bluebird houses.

For a real hoot, ask around about the bone that a serious coon hunter will take, wear around their neck, and use for a toothpick.

I live in the middle of town and I have coons come up to my kitchen door all the time and peer in (it's a French door). They're cute. I've never had them get in my bluebird house...have a PVC pipe wrapped around the pole, guess that keeps them out. I can't think of any reason to hate them, except that one might have rabies and bite my kitty cat, I guess. Now, the skunk I could do without for sure, and the possums I absolutely despise because they're just gross, and the armadillos tear up my flower beds. I have 'em all. Wish I could shoot 'em all.

You know you're in Arkansas when the best fun the teens can come up with is "cow tipping".

-------------------------------
If and that is a big if the cook knows how to cook raccoon it will taste just like roast beef. My mom cooked it once when I was a child and it was delicious. Any game has to be cooked by someone that knows what they are doing to get the "wild" out.

Yes.

The young ones are the best. Very tender, and BBQ'd (not *grilled*, real BBQ) they are monster tasty.

The older ones can get tough, but every time I've seen older ones cooked, they pressure cook them.

The key is that when skinning/gutting, just like possum, you've got to get all the scent glands out that are referred to as "kernels", located at various spots on the body.

As fancygal notes, you get somebody who knows what they're doing, and it's sure nuff good eatin'.
