University of Arkansas
Hello, my husband and I are planning to relocate to Fayetteville in 2010. I am finishing up my undergrad at USC in California and we are both ready to get out of Los Angeles. Everything about this place is just awful: traffic, prices, elitist mentality, graffitti EVERYWHERE, bleach blonde girls who wear $600 jeans, guys with their lacoste colars popped and rainbow sandals, press #1 for english, "gangstars", chollos and cracked out homeless people galore . We both work in downtown la and live only 10 miles away, but it still takes us anywhere from 30 min to an hour to get home depending on traffic. We pay $1400 rent for an 800 sqft apartment in a "nice" neighborhood but if you drive 2 miles south, you are in mexico. I am planning on going to law school in 2010 and I really want a change in lifestyle. We are not into partying or anything too exciting and HATE the hollywood lifestyle. We want to find a place where we can settle down and raise our 6 year old son in a better enviornment. Can anyone give me info on the University of Arkansas Law School and what kind of jobs are out there for real estate attorneys? Also careers in commercial property management (for my husband)? Lifestyle in Fayetteville? Elementary schools (near U of A)?Does anyone live on the outskirts and commute to Fayetteville for work? Any and all info would be so helpful, thank you!

My step-daughter graduated from University of Arkansas, and she absolutely loved it! I can't speak for law school, but the University itself has a good rep. Schools for you child in the NWA will be great. It is said that some of the best in our state are in the part. Don't limit yourself to just Fayetteville, as much of NWA is within commute distance to Fayetteville and are less "college kid party central" oriented. Also look at Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, and Bella Vista. On a whole, NWA is exactly opposite of LA in every way, which is great , since that is what you are looking for. Good luck!

Why not the University of Arkansas at Little Rock law school?
Just wondering.
There are some nice safe neighborhoods in West Little Rock for you and I don't really see a lot of Spanish speakers...not that they don't exist...and not that I have problem with those who speak Spanish. Heck, I love 'em.
In any case, good luck with everything.

The U of A is just as good as any other state school. I have heard that UALR has a better law school but I had heard that a few years ago so that may not be the case anymore. Sounds to me like Fayetteville is exactly what you're looking for. $1400/month will get you a 4 bedroom rental house in a good part of town.

If you're looking to escape Spanish speakers, guys with their lacoste collars popped up, "gangstars", chollos and homeless persons, you'll probably have to go further than Arkansas. The moon, maybe?
Preppy dressers abound in every suburban school in America. Homeless persons like to live in safe areas too. Wanna be gangstas and chollos come a dime a dozen and drug addicts (meth, not crack, is the drug of choice in the burbs and rural areas) are also common. I've also seen a lot of jobs advertised in NWA that request Spanish language skills so fat chance finding an English-only locale.
As far as the schools in NWA, they are among the better ones in the state and the law schools, both in Little Rock and Fayetteville, are respectable. Best of luck with your applications. If you're going to move to the state tho, could you please leave the xenophobia behind?
FIGHT ON!!

Well..........
Now I always thought that xenophobia was an intense dislike of foreigners.
I had no idea that it included the desire to be seperated from gang mentality.

Guess I'm xenophobic also.
They're gonna be surprised at the fillin' station.

Mirriam, Webster and their friends at American Heritage say xenophobia is the fear, hatred or contempt of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign. Learnin' is yer frend, Rog.

U of A is an excellent school and NW Arkansas and excellent area ... but that said, if you want to run away from the troubles of the country, you are going to have to run away from the whole country! NW Arkansas is known for a growning Hispanic population, likewise the school is known for a preppy feel to it, I'm sure there are bonuses and drawbacks to both and nothing as drastic as Lalaland but part of being content of where you live or where you move to is understanding that there is no utopia and accept it for what it is, it is harder to change a region, but easier to change one's expectations.

I think you would love Fayetteville, based on what you said. In NW Arkansas, you can live 10 miles out of town and be in town in probably 15-20 minutes. I've heard the schools are good, too. It is a nice, clean town, with beautiful scenery in any direction you take going out of it. And if you love the outdoors, it's perfect....there are so many hiking trails, canoeing rivers, biking trails, scenic drives, mountain lodges, etc. around there it will take you a lifetime to get to them all.
In Springdale, which is just north of Fayetteville (I've never been able to tell where one stops and the other starts, but Springdale is a lot different from Fayetteville....not as nice), there is a large Hispanic population. The only good thing I've ever found in Springdale is the Jones Center (link below). As for "press 1 for English", we get that here also, and there are almost no Hispanics here...can't get away from that, I suppose.
