We're looking into possible retirement locations. Thanks.

Pretty much all of Arkansas can get pretty humid yes. The northern portions (excepting the northern delta area around Jonesboro) are a bit less stifling than other parts but it can still get pretty damp in the summer. However, it's all pretty relative. People who come here from Florida, Louisiana or other areas further south think the humidity here is pretty low while people coming from your neck of the woods would tend to think the opposite. IMO, humidity is something you can adjust to if you find a particular liking to someplace in AR.

Have you been down for a visit yet?

A big yes! As Stormcrow has stated, if you are from Arizona the humidity here is going to seem awful (awful) at first, just as the dry air to a native Arkansan is horrible. But most who move here don't find our level of humidity to be stifling by any means and learn to adjust to it. Our state has plenty to love and the humidity is only one tiny drawback for some. Good luck in your decision!

Very true.

It takes about one season to acclimate.

First year....you're in shorts in December.

Second year...you grab a sweatshirt when it hits 70.

Try Calico Rock or Gilbert.

Stormcrow, I have not been to Arkansas yet. Here in Wisconsin, we get a very humid day now and then in the summer, but that's about it. What towns would be nice to retire to, that have lower humidity and lakes to fish? Is my best bet in northern Arkansas? Thanks.

As far as humidity, none of Arkansas is like South Louisiana, Houston, Florida, etc. However, as a general rule the Mississippi delta region is far more humid, the southeast corner of the state is the most humid. The mountain areas are less humid as well.

Hot Springs would be near the top of my list. Large retirement community with mountains, good hospitals and physicians, plenty to do. There are several beautiful lakes around it - Quachita (cleanest lake in U.S., Hamilton, and Catherine.

Mountain Home is more rural but it has nice lakes as well and beautiful mountain scenery, not to mention fishing the White River. That area is full of Chicago area retirees.

Bella Vista and the Eureka Springs area are nice well.

Yeah I'd tend to lean towards the northern portions of the state. Mountain Home is a great jumping off point. You can have a hospital with some very modest shopping close by. Or if you're more interested in rural lifestyle you can easily find that within close reach to town. If you prefer something with more urban-ish amenities then I'd agree with Apork's recommendation of Hot Springs. I would highly recommend an advance visit. Likely as not, you'll either love it here and never want to leave or you'll be able to easily cross it off your list.

True. (from Louisiana here) When I'm there in the wintertime, my hands dry out and the skin on my fingers gets all flaky and peels. I guess I would eventually adjust if I lived there. And even in the summer, when the locals are complaining about the humidity up there, I'm laughing.

If you are concerned about any aspect of the weather when contemplating a move in retirement, check that area out when that aspect is at its worse.

If its tolerable, you'll be fine.
