Alltel Wireless Purchase Thread
This is a tad off topic, but what's happening with Alltel? Are ya'll talking about Alltel arena shutting down or Alltel Communications? I apparently missed the news on this.

Alltel Wireless was purchased by Verizon. All the major hurdles such as regulatory and financial approvals have now been cleared. The deal is done. There's much speculation as to how much function will remain in Little Rock after the transition ranging from worst case scenario of practically NONE (almost everyone laid off) to very little (only the upper echelons of management laid off). Verizon has stated publicly they intend on trying to keep most jobs here but you know how that goes sometimes. My personal prediction is that there will be extensive layoffs with many being abosrbed by a growing Windstream and they will not be nearly so extensive as the worst case doom and gloom scenario.

I'm trying to get a solid answer if my Alltel wireless with unlimited download is going to stay intact.
I'm on contract, and Verizon caps at 5 gigs a month, Alltel doesn't.
I've gotten mixed answers.

Have you checked with Alltel employees?
I would think they would let you finish your Alltel contract as is but once it's up, you'll probably be on Verizon's data plan.
I considered getting Alltel but once I found out Verizon purchased them, I backed off. I still find it odd that Alltel has the Verizon character in their commercials...

They haven't finalized, IIRC.
People who have checked with Alltel/Verizon have gotten:
Verizon will honor all Alltel contracts
or
Unlimited download is just a feature, not a contractual item.
Thing is...they don't give you a paper contract, nor could I find one online.
I've been ecstatic with my Alltel wireless, with speeds from 500kbps to 2 mbps, and it operates everywhere.
Only burps I've ever gotten were in LR.

I'm pretty happy with AT&T, of course it could be cheaper but my phone works everywhere I go, except for maybe the mall sometimes. I love the rollover feature because there have been times my bill would have been HUGE without it.
I like the My Circle feature with Alltel but their selection of phones it not all that great but neither is AT&T's.
If I had my choice, I'd pick either Sprint (The Unlimited Everything package...) or T-mobile.
My only worry with Sprint is how clear my calling will be and if my phone will work everywhere.
T-mobile...it's not all that great in AR but they have a lot of cool phones and a lot of plans that would suit my calling and text messaging needs.
I've heard horror stories about billing issues with Verizon and all the charges they have.
Different strokes for different folks. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters.

I was told it would be something along the lines of say when Direct Tv and Dish Net merged. People using alltel will continue to have their great features and Verizon people theirs, that we will just have a bigger network. That being said, I will not bet on any scenario until I see it in writing!

DirecTV and Dish are still separate companies. A few years ago, Dish did try to buy DirecTV but that never went through.

Really? When I had my Dish Net put in a year or so ago, I was told differently by the Dish company and installers. They said that many did not realize they had merged because they still had two separate identities. hmmm.
