Bella Vista geese?
I heard y'all got a problem with them critters. They said they're going to oil the eggs to try to deter them?
Canadian geese are a real PITA. I've been to office complexes in several cities where they congregate around the "scenic pool", steal peoples lunches, chase people off, and are rude enough to relieve themselves all over the sidewalks, picnic tables, and benches.
Down here in the south, they like to hit catfish farms and eat the fingerlings that are released into the ponds.
Thousands and thousands of dollars spent every month to keep them off airport runways.
Vermin, if you ask me.
They do taste good, though. A little greasy, but a nicely grilled goose breast wrapped in bacon is memorable.
They avoid the ponds and creeks in the country. Ornithologists say that they don't come out here and stay in towns because they know they have no natural predator in the towns, but I know it's because they know we'll eat them.
Anybody in BV got a good goose tale?

no but PITA is going to get you big time. You know I always wonder if the PITA people realize when they pick a flower they are depriving some poor bee of his/her honey..???

Heavens no.........
Really though.......you're in BV. The report I heard was that 1,000 geese showed up (And....who counts them things anway?) and that it was just a mess.
Oiling eggs. So....that's gonna kill the fetus, but what about all them grown-up geese?
I would seriously like to see who's going to oil those eggs. I have seen geese when you get close to their nest/young, and you'd rather have a pit bull on ya.
BTW, Nita......I have a t-shirt that says "PETA" in big letters. Underneath that it says, "People for the Eating of Tasty Animals".
On the back it says, "I believe there's a place for all of God's creatures.....right next to my mashed potatos".
When I wear it out, folks just see the "PETA" thing first, and...if looks could kill I'd be dead 100 times over.
Then they read the line under it and laugh.
That shirt's gonna get me whupped someday.

Here's a couple of links, if anybody's mildly curious:
NWAnews.com :: Northwest Arkansas' News Source
Bella Vista POA to Oil Goose Eggs|Channel 7 News
I really like that KATV article, where they came up with the idea to get a border collie to chase the geese, then said it would cost *$4500* to get a border collie.............
Now....we use border collies out here. the one thing I hear more than "Want a horse?", is "Want a border collie?"
I know one that will be birthing in about a month or so.
Maybe they'd jump on it if we bid $2,000 apiece if you take the whole litter?

holy cow, what kind of border collies are they trying to get and yes, I am sure someone stood there and counted all 1000 geese.
I will say they are a pain, but we can't kill them and still live with PITA< I don't want to kill them, just teach them about birth control..

I will agree that's a dilemma. I imagine you've got more than your share of tree huggers round your parts.
When I see things like $4,500 for a border collie, I realize that things I fled from aere closer than I like to think.
Then there's the collar for the dog......that's another $700.
Obviously a government contract.

Could it be the $4500 is trying to account for lifetime costs and includes such upkeep items as food and housing requirements??

The article stated as an afterthought that the mayor didn't think he could get enough people to house the dog and let it run, so think that was a voluntary thing.
It could be lifetime cost, but it's deductible.
Even our dogs out here are deductible, wether they be workers or just 'security'. Food, vet, groomer, all a write-off.
If they got a dog, in an environment like that, no way there wouldn't be a line of people to take that thing in. Recognition in the community, newspaper article, neighbors all wanting to feed it.....
I'm seeing that as "You give me a positive, and I'll give you a negative so we don't do it".

Well if that isn't lifetime costs then it sounds like the old, "price it out of contention" solution.
I personally think the shotguns at 4AM solution is the best...
