Word on the street is that Wal-Mart laid off people EXPECTING to be laid off. Most were from the real estate side of corporate and supposedly, according to a neighbor, those people knew about the lay-off more than a year ago. Meaning, they were given advanced warning that with the downfall of the real estate market and economy that they would need to look for work elsewhere.

My cousin and his fiancee worked at the Wal*Mart in Bentonville. Eric is a manager of some sorts. She was a fashion... something and she got laid off. They now moved to New York to work for Wal*Mart.

Walmart doesn't seem to be laying off workers at least from NC, SC, and etc!!! B/C they just hired like 700 new employees in the Greenville/Spartanburg Area since 2008/2009, here in Greenville, NC they are planning a new super center (not a replacement), and in Wake County, NC they wanted to have 3 locations in one Town of less than 10,000!!! Also in the Greenville/Spartanburg area there is a new 400 job return center being built so they can't be doing to bad because of this recession unless it's just at the HQ!!! (sorry to hear that though)

The recent layoffs did not target stores at all, as I understand it, it was more from corporate people that were not needed because of the current economic scenario. Store employees are quite "safe" in the meaning that in any case, new stores will continue to be opened, maybe at a slower pace, but will continue nonetheless, remember that the bulk of those employees are low wage, the cuts were in the upper echelon...

My parents just bought up in Bella Vista and I was suprised as to how many homes were on the market. I was thinking Walmart but the realtor told me that her husband is a manger or something in Bentonville for walmart and walmart was doing fine. The housing was because 2 years ago she said you had every builder and their uncle spec. homes in Bella Vista and then the boom crashed and people could not sell their homes to retire in Bella Vista. The home my parents bought was new sort of because it was built 2 years ago but never sold. The bank owned it but the builder was from Tulsa, OK. so that had to be spec. home probably.

Anyway, I think that area will come back soon. First of all they not building and it was my understanding that the week I was there looking at homes, every realtor was out showing homes and my parents first pick sold the day before.

I dont know about HQ Walmart but where I live in MI there has been a hiring freeze for several months at our walmarts. Plus they have cut hrs... which means longer lines and no service help.. I have switched to another store to lessen my frustration.

This happened to us as well.
I came out and looked at homes back in January and the first home we made on offer on was a foreclosure and the bank did not budge. The second home was brand new but built four years ago and had never sold. The home was in foreclosure and the minute we decided to make an offer on it, two other offers came in and one was a full price offer! Then, our third choice sold while we were in the bidding war! CRAZY! The house we finally did purchase was great and the minute we signed the line another couple called to make an offer but our offer had already been accepted.

The market seems to be picking back up again and while some of the vendors that are contracted through Wal-Mart have gone out of business or laid off workers, the workers at corporate that were laid off several months ago, like I said, were expecting it last year. They were people in the real estate side of things and what-not.

Our granddaughter and hubby just tried to buy a foreclosure, nope, the bank would not even counter offer. The price was set and firm...!!!

As for layoffs, as we know there have been no more here affectin Wal-Mart. Someone mentioned in their area, I think it was "needing more" that in her state Wal mart is not hiring and cutting hours. That certainly isn't the case here at all. The lay off that started this thread was in referance to the headquarters, not our stores or our Sam's stores. We know 3 people who were just hired at Wal-Mart, all full time.
