Default Relocating Van Buren Area w/Dyslexic Child. . .

I have a child that will be entering the 4th grade in the fall and who has dyslexia. Our current school in Texas has a wonderful dyslexia program that teaches the students using the Scottish Rites techniques. I need to know if anyone can offer any suggestions on schools in that area that have a good program/teacher for this type of student.

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide!

Default Bumping up

Is there not anyone out there, a teacher or anything, that can help with this question?

I would truly value anyone's opinion that has a child with similar background and what their school has done to assist their child.

I have emailed the counselors and principals of some of the area schools, but have yet to get a response from anyone.

HELP!

Default dyslexia

Where in Texas are you? (my daughter has dyslexia and we have considered Texas). I believe the Scottish Rites techniques are based on Orton-Gillingham methods, if that helps you. My daughter has to currently attend a private school for dyslexic children here in Indiana because there is nothing offered for her at the public schools in Bloomington as they just thought she was mildly mentally retarded. (There were 5 other students that enrolled in her school last year that were told the same thing! You might try going to some of the dyslexia sites.

I am in Texarkana, TX and Pleasant Grove ISD is the district here that has such a great dyslexia program.

I am dyslexic to a certain degree, but when I was in school more than 50 years ago they had no special ed or ways of identifying such problems. I was just told to give up any thoughts of an education after high school and to consentrate on business. Luckily my father wouldn't accept this and I was able to go to college, get half way decent grades and I have done fine as an adult. I still don't spell well as many of you have probably seen and I read very slowly. I do love to read. Reading out loud is out of the question.

Dyslexic people see words differently than the normal individual. Example: saw may look like was, etc. I would add letters to words or leave them out. Dyslexic kids (adults also) are not slow nor do they have any other learning disibilities. In fact many are way above average in intellegence. I have heard Eistien was dyslexic. I don't know if that is fact or not.

I am sure someone else will explain the condition better than I have.

nita
