Most think that it is the symbol of slavery.
The other method that is used is adding in a Southern drawl. The guy/girl with the drawl is always less intelligent than anyone else in the movie/tv show. Therefore, as most of these movies/shows are based in Northern cities, and most of their characters are from those cities, it definitely looks like a Northern superiority complex.
I can understand that about the comedians, but what about Jeff Foxworthy? Isn't he from the South? If he isn't, I'm mistaken.

The rebel flag doesn't matter to me if one flies it or not. I do look at it as a way of Southerners appreciating their heritage. But, then again the swastika also meant something different long before Hitler came around.

We all have different accents depending on where we are from. To tell you the truth a lot of guys in the North love the Southern accent on women down there.

We don't have a Northern superiority complex. Maybe that is just how we are perceived to others. Although, I am not saying there are not people up here that do sport an arrogance, but you can find that anywhere in the country and probably around the world for that matter.

No, I agree with you on a lot of that, I am just saying that because the media is primarily based in the north, what the media says is ofter perceived to be what the North believes. If not that, then there is the thought that the media only produces what people want to see. As the largest metros are predominantly Northern, some see a tie between the two.

On the other hand, many of my encounters with northerners have gone something like this. "Oh, so where are you from?" "Arkansas" "oooohhkayyy.....so, is your sister good in bed." Also heard "whats it like banging goats?", "well at least if you are banging your sister, you don't have to deal with a mother-in-law", "Does that make the kid your son and nephew", "Do you and your brother fight over who gets your sister every night?" etc, etc ad nauseum. It gets old really quickly.

After someone has gotten to know me for a while, many will express shock that I am actually from the South. They ask me why I don't speak like a hick, why my vocabulary is so strong, how I made it through high school, or if I actually went to one. A few people have even asked if I grew up in the North and moved down South later. The sad thing is that most people from the north that I have met will have some reaction of this kind.

I'm from NJ, and had roommates from Texas and Mississippi. Both of them were wonderful people, and we all got along very well. Of course we had some different perspectives and insights, but that didn't mean a thing. People are people wherever you go. There are different regional cultures throughout the US. Go explore them and enjoy some of those differences. Go take some time to meet some different people from different places. This provincial bickering and bashing is so silly. Enough already with the preconceived notions and stereotypes of northerners and southerners. Live and let live already. It's so much easier and requires so less energy.

That is sad to hear, but I would have to say that the only way ignorance can be defeated is with education. People that are ignorant doesn't mean they are stupid, it just means they don't know the truth. Just as a child has to learn that not all animals can be associated with the schema of "dog", same can be said for fitting individuals into stereotypes.

When meeting someone, it should not be assumed that someone from the north is cold, or that someone from the south is still mourning the end of the Confederacy. Also, on the reverse, northerners may not have graduated from an Ivy League school, and southerners may not always exhibit "southern" hospitality.

The more a stereotype is disproved, the sooner it will cease to exist!

Great post! I already knew that Michigan was near the bottom, but didn't realize other states received less than we do.

I wonder how they determined what amounts went to different states and why.

In five years time it's highly doubtful the order has changed much.

I didn't post that link, by the way, in an attempt to bash the south, only to challenge the poster's statement. Ignorance and arrogance can be found on both sides of the M-D. Sometimes, however, the stats don't lie.

By the way, I'm originally from just down the street from you in Toledo.
