To be honest I'm not really thrown off by the preconceived notions everyone has of Arkansas as a whole being a bunch of hillbilly racists etc. I've gotten the same things over my lifetime about new jersey with people calling it ugly, toxic, etc when in all reality it's actually a pretty state with a lot to offer. From all my travels it's in my humble opinion to be the most well layed out and organized areas for people to live in from a suburban standpoint. Granted the cost of living is ridiculously high which isn't pleasant, but that's many places in the northeast as well.
Anyway, as said before Arkansas doesn't concern me, it's Little Rock. I say this because I've heard some torubling things about the city in terms of violence, and it's sort of thrown me off a little. I've also heard that the area around UALR isn't the greatest either so that' also bothering me a bit. My main questions are if all areas of Little Rock are rough, and is the area around UALR that bad? Also, I'm a younger guy, 23, and was wondering if there were any areas of the city that had a younger sort of more vibrant atmosphere with things happening on weekends etc? I'd ideally like to live in a place like that, but if little rock as a whole is that bad then i guess i would just find a suburb and live out there. Also, what is the general cost of a 1 bedroom apartment? I've looked and so far I'm shocked to see that some cost almost as little as my rent from my last apartment when I was sharing it with 2 other people. Is the cost of living that much lower everywhere? Any info would be greatly appreciate thanks for your time.

Listen to jenni-b. She seems to know the living areas and night life. IMO- You can find the type of night life you prefer because there is a pretty good variety. Neighborhoods to live in also run the gamut. You'll really have to personally check it out. Safety; there are areas I wouldn't go into in the daytime but others I would not hesitate to go at night. So I guess the bottom line is that L.R. is not much different than most towns, large and small. Five years ago my family and I moved here from a small town and think it was a good move. So come on!!! I don't think you will regret it.

I don't see it as racism as much as a preference by the poster for certain surroundings.
In the past, we've had postings by a lot of ethnic groups. I recall a person of Chinese descent asking about the oriental community in some town.
Nobody said, "HEY BUDDY.......YOU DON'T LIKE WHITE PEOPLE OR WHAT??".
Nope.
However, every time a person can be remotely interpreted to stating a preference to living in a mainly white area, they get jumped all over.
When one goes out looking for a fight, they can surely find one. If you look for racism in every Saturday morning cartoon, you'll find it there also. Not everyone wants to live in a diversified neighborhood, and if one has earned their way in the world and can afford to make those decsions, I don't see a thing wrong with it. If one chooses to live in a totally mixed neighborhood, so be it.
I shall never hold that I am so important that I can offer judgement on another persons preferred neighborhood.

Rog, you may be right, it is just some love to bring up certain subjects, mainly color to see if they can get something started or it looks that way to me.

Well, there's a lot of race obsessed anti-bigots out there. They are worse than bigots when it comes to throwing out common sense in pursuit of their self absorbed idealistic purges. Every habitat seeker out there, be they black or white, is trying to avoid the ghetto. That don't make 'em racist. It is just their survival instinct kicking in.
FWIW, I have always liked Little Rock as cities go. Part of my raisin' was done around Bryant/Bauxite. It holds some of the fondest memories of my childhood. I have no idea what it's like there now. We also lived in the Heights for awhile before moving to Helena. I'm just not too keen on city life, at my age. I'm lookin' fo' some country, in my living arrangements.
I'll leave the comments on Little Rock quality of living to you youngsters. LOL

You're absolutely right, Nita.
As I stated in another thread, there are people who do not post unless they can create an issue.
