Racism and Arkadlphia
Hi all, I am glad I found this forum. I hope I will get some valuable information by exhchanging information in this forum. I am moving to Arkadelphia in some weeks' time. And I was wondering what kind of racism, if at all exists there. I am currently living in California and I have not faced any such issues as an Asian.
But I see my peers and teachers concerned about me being a victim of racism once I start living in Arkadelphia. Please give me some insight.

Are you black, white, Asian, Hispanic or what? Why are you moving to Arkadelphia may I ask and why do your teachers and peers think you will have a problem. Have they lived in the area or are they going on hearsay?

He said he is Asian. I am assuming that your peers are thinking that you may have a problem because it is Arkansas and Arkansans are stereotyped as being racist. I don't see you having any issues.

Who knows what you'll run into. It's the nature of living in a melting pot society. I remember in my high school days (late 60's) in West Helena, AR, the few Asians we had were barely noticed as being different. They ran with the pack and were actually kinda looked up to for their unique perspectives.
You will find the underlying culture quite different than that of California, though. Lot's of Sunday School attitudes to run into. Best not to argue. Talk about the weather, or huntin' or fishin'. Sports maybe. Don't try to run down Clinton unless you know who you're talking to. Too close to Hope, AR.
If you like outdoor activities like huntin', fishin', hiking, canoeing, exploring, buggy riding, jeep riding, etc... you'll really enjoy the place. If you're basically a city boy or girl, you'll be homesick for CA in no time.

Good points, we had only one Asian family (Japanese) in our high school, we are talking about the 50s. The guy was President of our class, his sister was a student body officer, I don't remember what right now. I would point out this was Ca, but I also will mention it was before Ca became the CA of today.

There are two colleges in Arkadelphia, so I would think there would be a diverse population among the students.

I do not live in Arkadelphia but do have family there and do spend time there. Also I live is a simliar sized town in South Arkansas with a State university. I do not think you should be concerned especially in Arkadelphia. I agree with previous poster that the two major universities draw a large contingent of international students and a diverse faculty. This is all a plus for Arkadelphia.
Also the nearest place to go for most everything is Hot Springs which is even more diverse.
It is true that you often find what you are expecting but I would predict that you will soon be wondering why you ever were concerned about this issue.

Hey! Come on over, I think you will be pleased with the community and find no racism except possibly a few individuals. That will be found in any community though. I lived at Malvern, a community about 30 minutes east of Arkadelphia, for over 40 years and only moved because of family situation. I spent lots of time in Arkadelphia and saw no racism. Will you be working or be a college student, etc? I have a couple of friends at Henderson State University who would be good contacts. If you would like to, you may send me a direct message and we can exchange more ditails.

Don't worry about racism. HSU gets quite a few international students in addition to random kids from all over the nation. Everyone is about as nice as they can get.
However, once you arrive in Arkadelphia and really take a look around you might wonder why you ever wanted to move there. If you are wanting the small town (10,000+/-) feel you will definitely have it.
