Bella Vista......
Hello All,
I am new to the forum and came across it by doing a search on "moving out of state rants" ! LOL. (We are moving to NWA in a couple weeks and this moving and cleaning and packing is just killing us!!!)
So here is the story.....I am 31 years old, have a wonderful girlfriend and she has a great son. We currently reside in Redwood City, CA....20 miles south of San Francisco. My girlfriend(Tiffany) was laid off a few months ago....and now my job is looking not so good. Our current landlord wanted us to sign another year lease @ 2K a month and with my job going sour now....we refused to sign.
I have a good friend that lives outside of Yellville,AR and I visited him back in March. I immediately liked what I saw in AR. So I asked Tiff to do some research on NWA and see what the cost of living is, jobs, schools, etc. Well to my surprise...Tiffany liked what she researched on the Fayetteville/Rogers/Bentonville area. Also every person she talked to on the phone was so nice and polite....very hospitible.(Something we don't get here in California)
So....we found a nice 3 bdrm house to rent in Bella Vista. We actually signed the lease last week via Fax. We have done loads of research on Bella Vista. We really like the Fitness Center, the lakes surrounding the town....everything we have seen and read was just great.
One thing we are worried about is how residents of Bella Vista look at outsiders. I was born and raised here in the San Francisco Bay Area, Tiffany was raised in Reno, NV and lived in the Bay Area for a few years.
Any Bentonville/Fayetteville/Bella Vista locals willing to chime in? We have read that alot of the population in NWA are from out of state. And of course...we will be definitely be wanting to make some friends in the area!
So for you NWA folks....hows life there? If you moved to NWA from out of state....do you think you made a good decision? How do you like NWA?
Any help is appreciated and thank you for reading!!
Tim

My parents just moved there and they loved it. They lived in Forrest Hills, CA near Aulburn then moved by me in Eastern Ok. about 4 years ago and hated this area (ranching) so....they sold here and moved to Bella Vista about 3 or 4 months ago and they are in love with the place. Happier by far than in Northern California and definitely better than in ranching community. I have cows so I understand the reason for no malls in Eastern OK. they didn't. Bella Vista will have everything CA has except less people, less conjestion and less price.

Thats great! Thank you for the reply. We are definitely looking forward to leaving the "rat race" here in Nor Cal. Less people and less congestion sounds perfect right now, lol. Thanks again.

Well Tim,
Let me start by welcoming you to the natural state and to Bella Vista. I will give you my opinion although it may be a little bit biased.
We live here, love it and can't imagine living anywhere else and we are originanly for California.
You will find at least 60% of those living here are from somewhere else. Lot of people form Calif and Texas but more from Iowa, Minnisota, Wis and places north of here.
Be prepared for the humidity but at least you are coming toward the end of the summer. Coming from California you are going to experience a certain amount of cultural shock which I hope will not totally throw you for a lupe..
Although BV is changing demographially quite fast it is still a senior, retirement location so you will be the babies. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of young people, but it is still a community of older citizens.
Yes, the lakes are wonderful, fishing is great, outdoor activities are everywhere. I would suggest you subcribe to one of the AR papers so you can find out about everything going on locally. This will help you adjust.
Will you be accepted? you sure will as long as you do not try to push Calif ideas down our throats. BV is pretty conservative, but certainly not everyone fits the mold of ultra right wingers, even the olders.
You will not find a lot of shopping locally but just about 10 minutes away you can find everything you will need to make you happy.
If you have any questions pleas PM me, I would love to give you some suggestions.

When are you actually leaving California and are you planning on stopping a couple of times along the way? I am sure you are. Not knowing the exact route you will take I can only guess, but I would stop somewhere near AZ?NM and then again in Ok or Texas. Maybe you are not going the route I am thinking of...Maybe you will be a little further north, i bet you will, now that I remember you are coming from the bay area.

Yes ...we plan on stopping in NM. Me and Tiffany will be switching off driving. I want to try and get to NM if I can.....then get a room for a night....then finish out the drive to AR.
We are going to take I-40 the whole way pretty much. Just taking I-5 south to Bakersfield then taking I-40 all the way to AR.

that is how we would do it as well. If you can make it to NM I would suggest you think about stopping in Grants. There is a Days Inn, I know they are great but for one night it is fine and the prices are right. If you only go as far as Gallop and don't mind spending a few extra bucks try the Hampton Inn. There are 2 of them in Gallop, the one on the south side of 40 is less expensive..
