snakes are real here!!!
Well now I believe not so nice snakes live in the NWA area..Last night we found a little guy, he was dead, thank goodness and where was he? In our screened in porch..What was he? A copper head. He may have been just a baby, but if there are babies there must be a mommy and daddy somewhere....

Hi nita :-)
Did you notice if it had a sulphur-yellow tail tip? Are you positive it was a copperhead? If it was then I don't blame you at all for being uneasy about it. I love snakes and lizards but I wouldn't want that kind of snake hanging around inside my porch! Anyway, it's very doubtful you'll see another one, right? ;-)
....nice seeing your post here....take care!

I have killed a 6" copper head on my back porch. Because of that, I've been extra cautious and found that we have a blue racer living in our bushes. I see home occaisionally and he will zip back under some cover.
We also have a pair of little lizards living there as well. I've named them Larry and Elizzzzabeth.

Why? If it had this, would it not be a copperhead? I tried to find a good picture of a copperhead's tail but couldn't.

Yep, they're around.
Nita, I thought I sent you a link for a picture of a *huge* copperhead crawling across the street in Bella Vista.
Yeah, mom & dad and more little ones are around, and the small ones are more dangerous than the large ones.
By the time a snake gets bigger, it figures out that it needs to reserve venom if it wants to eat, so it doesn't use a lot on a perceived threat. However, the younger ones haven't figured this out yet, and will give you the whole thing.
The hot part of summer, and the cool part of spring/fall are the worst, because they will come around seeking heat or shade.
The majority of bites around our area have been on open porches when they seek a shady spot, people step outside not checking the porch and get bit.
If you're around brush/weeds, you think about it, on your porch you don't.
Speaking of snakes, with this dew that's been setting, I can go out on my deck in the morning and see right where the snakes have crawled and the critters walk.
Lotsa activity during the night.

Snakes. Lovely. And what type of animal is needed to get rid of them? Please say ducks. *crossing fingers*

I used to be a resident manager at the Lodge on Whitney Mountain in the 80s I found 2 inside on the lower level and many outside
I grew up in Ar and love it but I dont miss the poisonous snakes Ive seen many of them of all kinds in Ar in many different kinds of places.I even had one baby copper head crawl across my hand one day when I was about 8 or 9 years old I'll never forget that

We live on a farm. Lots of snakes. My dog got bit by a rattle snake...almost died. He never learns though he still catches them and kills them. We have a host of rattle snakes, copper heads and water moccasins (sp.) in the ponds.
My father-in-law kills a few every week. Just can't get rid of them. I hate snakes, although if they stay out in the fields not too bad because they get rid of the field mice, which eventually find their way into the home. Never had a snake in the house...knock on wood.
I am always on the look out for them when I am out in the field. As long as you pay attention you will be o.k., they don't like you anymore than we like them.

When I moved away in 91 it seemed like with all the growth I saw more and more snakes I felt because they were losing a lot of their natural habitat to development. The population in NW Ar was about 100000 then, know its somewhere over 600000 there must be even less of their natural habitat for them.Do you see even more of them in places you wouldn't expect?
