Default Recommendations on great neighborhoods in Fayetteville?

I am considering relocating to Fayetteville to work at the University. I am a single mom with two daughters in middle school and high school. I would really like to live in an older, downtown neighborhood (not in the suburbs) if possible, but want to make sure we are in a safe neighborhood with good schools and is not too rowdy (i.e. I don't want to live next door to a frat house).

Is that possible? If not, what are the best neighborhoods as far as schools go that aren't too far out.

The areas surrounding the University are really nice. Try over on by the library, by Wilson Park, over on Sang Ave, or up kind of by the courthouse. You'll recognize the old areas once you drive around the downtown area. All of those areas are by the high school. I'm not sure where the middle school is, but Fayetteville isn't that big, it can't be that far away.

Definitely try to live around downtown. Pretty much all areas are safe, and the frat houses are contained to campus. Just don't live right next to the stadium and you shouldn't be too worried about any kind of rowdiness.

Let me know if you have any questions...I used to live there and go to the university!

I hear Farmington is one of the best school districts in the entire state. It's about 5 minutes from the university. Prairie Grove is smaller and quiet little town just a little further down the road. I almost moved there a few years ago.

The area around Wilson Park is nice but it can be expensive. There are also older-styled houses around the main square, which is still close to the University for work. The best thing to do (obviously) is to visit and you can get a feel for the various downtown neighborhoods.

This reallly depends on what you're willing to spend. Wilson Park and the downtown area tend to be expensive. Are you looking to buy or rent? You might also check out the Walker Park area.

The OP is looking to live in a downtown type setting which Farmington nor Prairie Grove have. Fayetteville hardly has one but it's a metropoilis compared to those two towns.

Default Thanks for the advice

I have always lived in huge, sprawling cities so it is crazy to me to think about whole towns being only 5 minutes away from eachother. I have never lived in a small town so I am excited about that and about the possibility of actually NOT commuting for an hour to work. I can't wait to visit. If anyone hears anything about the schools in the older parts of Fayetteville, I would love to hear it! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my post. It is very much appreciated.

As far as schools, Fayetteville High School is one of the best in the state. It's public school, but it's right next door to the U of A, so they get the benefit of that too. One of my best friends graduated from FHS, and she's a doctoral candidate now and graduated college with almost a 4.0. She's really smart, but from what she told me about high school, if you apply yourself at FHS, it's a really good education.

Good luck!

Well, technically if you live in Fayetteville and work in Rogers or Bentonville your commute could easily be an hour depending on what time of day. Mornings are not so bad but afternoons can get backed up on I540. The problem is that there is only one main road (I540) connecting all the cities.

If you can afford it, the historical district in Fayetteville is nice....off Lafayette or Maple Sts. Avoid anything west of 540.
