southeast arkansas
I have possible job opportunities at a paper mill in southeast arkansas on the miss. river delta.
I am from the midwest and would appreciate any information on the towns in the area. (Arkansas city, McGahee, etc.)
-Which town is the best for families?
-Which town has the best schools?
Thanks!

Wow - if you are talking McGehee and Dumas and that area, it's kind of depressed. Have you thought about jumping the border and going into Greenville, Mississippi? Which paper mill?
Lake Village might be an option if it's not too far from where you will be working....more info, please!

It is the Potlatch Mill in Cypress Bend, AR.
Seems like the options are limited around there.

Unless you farm cotton or soybeans, the Delta IS limited....there's a couple of casinos, Greenville, Mississippi and Lake Village, AR, are decent-sized town.....but anything in the delta at all really is farmland for the most part. I happen to love the delta but can't see spending a lifetime there. Don't know where you're from, perhaps you should look at one of Potlatch's other locales? It's flat, it's hot, and there isn't a lot going on - if you crave solitude and don't require a lot otherwise, you might do fine....but the delta seems to be for the ones born there who have ties to the land itself. Just my opinion, of course...I'm not sure about where Cypress Bend is, but if you're near Arkansas City, you're in the middle of nowhere.

ALOT of the people that work at that mill live in Monticello, Arkansas. It is a nice town in Southeast Arkansas. The schools are very good also. Check out www.monitcellocityof.org (broken link) and www.monticellolive.com!

If you plan to settle and work in the delta, defenitly go with monticello. Great schools, even has a 4 year school University of Arkansas at Monticello, which happens to be the leading college in the nation for forestry. Truthfully im not crazy about the delta area, i like north and west arkansas for me personaly. If your going to live in the delta, by far the best town would be Monticello.

I'm originally from that part of the state, and as previously mentioned, Monticello is your best choice; possibly even your only choice. Southeast Arkansas and the Delta region in general is probably the poorest and most poverty strickened part of the nation. Monticello is like the oasis of Southeast Arkansas, even though it isn't much better than the surrounding areas.
