Arkansas Moonshine
Mention of this in another thread made me wonder. Is there anyplace in Arkansas where a person can still get moonshine? Seriously. How would an average Joe like me go about buying some (if I was inclined to, that is)?

A year ago there was a builder of stills in AR. But to use one is still illegal except for research so I doubt anyone will give you a factual answer in public. To risky of time in for bad behavior. It's like asking where can I buy meth.

This thread is more out of curiosity than anything else. And I obviously wouldn't want names posted here. Just areas, or counties or regions of the state.
Also, I realize moonshine and meth are both illegal. But I would put meth in a different, MUCH worse, category than shine. Heck, moonshine probably isn't much different than the bourbon I sampled a couple of days ago.

Nomadicus essentially had the right answer with the meth comment. You have to know somebody that knows somebody to find it or just go walking up to old men with overalls and gin blossoms and start asking.
And the stuff is no bourbon. Ever had Everclear? You can run vehicles on this stuff.

Moonshine is plentiful in Arkansas. When I was in high school (in the Crawford/Sebastian County area) I had a good friend who got it for us. It will definitely grow hair on your chest. I wouldn't touch the stuff now though.

Yes there is moonshine in AR.
Yes, I know people that make it.
No, it certainly isn't going to taste like the bourbon you sampled.
Some people can make it, some are still in moonshine 097. There's a skill to it.
There is also comercially produced moonshine. Same stuff, it's just got a label on it.
OK....if this location gets slapped off of here, DM me and I'll tell you where to get it.
A place in Thayer, MO called , "Ray Noble's liquor", on the south side of Thayer where 63 enters, carrys a couple different brands.
The thing about home made is it's not consistant. One batch may be great, the next OK.
I'll stick to Booker's.

Ha! Thanks RogMar. Okay, got it. Maybe you should edit your post to remove the name. I wouldn't want to be responsible for getting anyone in hot water.

Great post about consistancy and the difference between good moonshine and bad moonshine.
I live in the heart of moonshine country during prohibition ( Minnestoa 13 was sold and served in the finest " speakeasy" in New York city and San Francisco.
My father ( born 1890) drank his fare share as many of his neigbors were in the business.
After prohibition ended, some younger folk started making it for " tradition".
My dad said some of that stuff tasted like kerosane.
As RogMar pointed out, there is good moonshine and bad moonshine.

I have a neighbor down the road who is an engineer. About 5 years into working those degrees, he bailed out, bought some land out here, and has been working maintenance at a local business for 18 years.
His still is a thing of great beauty, and the product is guaranteed to make you gasp, if nothing else.
I've often been down there when he's cooked and announced that the batch was worthless except for giving the pigs the mash, and I have seen him pull in here, get out of his truck(as I walk out to greet), and he reaches in and extracts a mason jar, extending it to me with two hands as if it's King Solomon's jewels, with that crooked little grin on his face.
It is then, that I know he's very proud of this one.
The realization also hits me that the afternoon is going to be (A) Very good (B) Have stimulating conversation (C) I'm guaranteed not to remember it the next morning.
It will cure what's ailing ya, make the crippled walk, the unbelievers believe, the deaf to hear, and it'll de-worm ya at the same time.
