I believe property tax is included on the list.

Back in 2007, I moved to Louisiana for a year. My state income tax was 1/2 that of Arkansas. That being said, the cost of property below Interstate 10 (Hurricane Belt) was outrageous compared to Arkansas

I live in Suffolk County, NY. Our home is approx. 1700 sq.ft., and it is on 1/4 acre. Value is probably about $200k. Our property taxes alone are $6700/yr. and that is with the star exemption, and veterans exemption.

Taxes here are horrendous, so we have been looking at many different (hopefully warmer, and less expensive) states to retire to.

What about the ad valorem tax, in Arkansas?

Another factor not mentioned is that if you earn enough to itemize on federal income taxes, state income taxes are deductible just as property taxes or charitable donations are, so a comparison should include an estimated reduction in federal income tax.

It's fine and dandy if you're taxed less in another state, but if your house costs twice as much in that other state, what have you really accomplished?

exactly, I believe there are many ways to judge cost of living, some seem to think only the taxes are an issue. As I have mentioned before, our home alone would be at least double and maybe triple what we paid in almost anyplace we have lived in the past. Even in NM, considering the neighborhood we are now in, our home would be higher. We were in a similar neighborhood in NM, but the surrounding areas were very different. We had high crime, extreme poverty, almost no shopping, no decent restaurants, no medical facilities and our taxes were still a little higher. We sold our home there for almost exactly what we paid here, but it wasn't the same quality.
