Hi. I visited NW Arkansas a couple years ago twice to visit my sister. They lived in Fayetteville and had a nice big affordable house. The brick work of the houses in this neighborhood were crap but the houses were nice and the over-all area was quite nice. Nice and sunny and bright. We drove on 40 from NC and seen the beautiful scenery.

Well they moved from there already, husband worked for Proctor&Gamble and was transfered. I think it was a really crappy deal for them to move to relocate to MD. Really they wanted to be closer to fam. Neway.

I consider moving to Arkansas because its affordable and there aren't so many people corporate style communities. I'd like to buy a home, have a garden, low tax, be closer with god, etc.... What are some more positive reasons I should move there? or negative? I live near nyc which is very over-rated. The quality of people here is low, the walmarts just aren't the same, too busy and frustrated commuting in the cold, everyone has socialist beliefs or accept corruption even if they call themself traditional.

I've live here all my life and was never quite happy, I'm 23 now and unmarried and basicly just want to prepare for settling down so I'm thinking right now. I have the entrepreneur background. Any pointers are appreciated.

Sounds like what you want might be here in the NWA area but entrepreneur or not you ened to think of where you will make a living and how? though our unemployment rate is lower than the national average by a lot it is over 7% now.

Is this a joke? Are you making fun of Arkansas? "Everyone has socialist beliefs"? Are you impersonating a backwoods Arkansan criticizing the northeast?

As someone who also lives in New Jersey, I can assure you he is not...

Although "everyone" is obviously a bit of hyperbole.

Because of the amazing influx of people to the area in recent times (thank you WalMart), you generally have five kinds of people in the area. 1) retirees who have moved to a less expensive area; 2) college students (Fayetteville), 3) upscale corporate types who have been relocated here for employment 4) long term "locals" and 5) the Hispanic working class.

Long term locals tend to be on the lower end of the education and sophistication scale (not in every case, of course, but speaking in generalities). Even high-end long term locals (i.e. dentists, lawyers, business owners), are going to be more red-neck than people of the same profession in say....Ohio, Arizona, etc.

Upscale corporate types are going to have their cliques and not be terribly open to anyone who is not upscale themselves, because they have had to deal with long term locals and their opinion is that nobody is quite as good as they are.

Retirees are generally grumpy and want to be left alone, unless you are also a retiree or at the very least over 50. Being 23 they will have no use for you other than if you can do something for them (cut their lawn, fix their computer) and then they will complain about how much you charge and generally be unpleasant.

The other two categories pretty much speak for themselves.

Of course, there are a few people around like YOU who do not fit into these categories, but they are few and far between.

That is my take on the area (which is, by the way, scenically very beautiful), I'm sure other replies will give you more information.

I think you misunderstood. I took it as saying, that is what he doesn't like about living in the NYC metro area..not AR...

And the lawyers, doctors, etc are no more RedNeck here than say AZ. Maybe a little more so than OH. Are you confusing Republicans or even Right wingers with Rednecks? There is a big difference. yrsinBranson
Where did you get the idea seniors want to be left alone and are grumpy? These are the same seniors I know in the NWA area..

I would think twice about what area of Arkansas you pick. Eastern half is thoroughly dominated by big agriculture and all that chemical bonanza it takes to run it, it's flat and boring, huge fields with no/little public recreational space for the dispossessed, it makes you claustrophobic and depressed, abject poverty of some towns can compete with 3rd world, it's really hot and humid too. NW 3 quarters look much pretties landscape wise, islands of wilderness, twisty narrow roads, poverty, poultry industry and it's waste, Mexican slave labor, Wal-Mart birthplace, some tourism and retirement death rows. If you are an independently wealthy seeking rural Arkansas retreat stay to the West. If you need to make a living - good luck.

I have to say, your discription of the eastern part is a little exagerated to put it mildly plus the OP seems to indicate the NW corner is where he is considering and why do you say, one must be indipendently wealthy. I don't know where you live or if you do live in AR but you certainly don't know much about the NW area..or let's put it this way, you are ver opinionated and your opinion is somewhat warped.

???? Arkansas has a reputation for being socialist too. Arkansas is arguably the most Democratic southern state.
