I am new to the horse racing scene since I have just been thrown into the middle of it with my move, but this thing is getting some crazy hype. They are dubbing it "The Race of the Ages." Is anyone planning on coming in for this thing? Hot Springs is going to be a madhouse on the weekend of April 8-10. Since I live on Central, I am going to stock up and pretend that I got snowed in.

Good idea, heck it was pretty busy on opening Saturday in the rain and cold weather. I can imagine the race between these 2 will be like..It will be a fun day though, hopefully we will see it on TV...

Hey! You are learning fast!! During the entire race meet we go the opposite direction for lunch, or hold off 'till about 1PM because by then most folks are inside Oaklawn and out of the eat joints.

A few years ago, I took a short trip down to Hot Springs near the end of January to escape the bitter Minnesota cold.

After arriving at Hot Springs, I was reading the local newspaper and noticed the next day was opening day at the race track and it was a special anniversary for the track.

We took in opening day ( never been to a horse track before)
( made a few $5 bets, won a little,lost a little )

What surprised me was all the black men who were there all decked out in fancy suits and wearing hats cocked on their heads.

They were placing bets galore and studying the stats.
I felt intimidated by all those " experts"

However, it was comical watching them toss their bets in the air after each race.
When the races ended, those " professionals" had lost both their money and especially their swagger.

Yup, back home we would label them--" all hat,no cattle"

well, I would call them "dressed up to enjoy a day at the track." winning or losing is not the point. (though winning is definitely preferable!) the point it to enjoy the day, people watching, drinking, eating, watching the ponies. if people enjoy dressing up to do so, more power to them.

sheesh.

I am taking my 5-yr-old daughter to Oaklawn this weekend (I am thinking it shouldn't be too busy). She keeps seeing the horses walking around when we drive by and she has been begging to go. It will be both of ours first time to go to the track. I have absolutely no interest in going to the Apple Blossom though.

Some of the locals go around after a race picking up those "tossed" tickets to see if anyone accidentally threw away a winner. It's kinda like checking the pay telephone and drink machine coin return slot. Occasionally they'll find a winner, but they pick up lots of tickets.

jenni, great post. that is what life is all about. For some entertainment is going to chruch, for some it is going to a nice restaurant and spending a hundred or more on dinner, for others it is going fishing and for someone else it is a day at the track or a casino...Everyone should have something they enjoy, if the poines is their thing more power to them...

You might be able to rent your place out for a couple thousand bucks that weekend. Craigslist shows 3 BR homes being rented for thousands for the race. Sounds like an opportunity.
