Hi all,

My mother and I are thinking about getting out of the rat race of the suburbs in New York and moving down to AR. We aren't 'set' on a location, but Texarkana sounds wonderful (my mother has a friend down there). Anyway, can anyone tell me more about it?

Coming from New York City area I expect a big change but I'm very open to that. I'm 21 and in nursing school. My mother's company is opening more locations in this area and transfering for her would be quite easy so we aren't so very concerned about the job market (although, it is something to keep in mind always).

Anyway, I'm interested in home prices down there. Hopefully, they will be a lot cheaper than here (average home price in my current area is about $600,000 for a typical ranch style home). What kind of prices would we be looking at down there?

What is the shopping like? We aren't concerned about the school system as both my brother and I are in college.

Thank you so very much for any information you can provide. We aren't set on *just* Texarkana, any surrounding areas would be great as well.

SuburbanDweller, if I were to live in the Texark region, I would look at Jefferson, Texas about 50 miles south from Texarkana. It is a nice little town. You should be able to buy a really nice house in the Texark region for around 300,000 or so and that would be a REAL NICE house. You can still find 3 bedroom, 2 bath suburban homes in the 100,000s. Be sure and visit Caddo Lake. It is a really neat lake to see with the giant water lilypads and cypress and it just looks swampy and mysterious. I do have to tell you that the Texark region is alligator country so whenever you are near a pond, a lake, a bayou or any water in general, be on guard and don't just go into it or near it without looking out for them.

Schools, the ones I can think of, Texarkana has A&M University-Texarkana ,but I don't know much about it, Longview, TX has Tourneau Univ., Marshall, TX has Texas Baptist Univ. and Tyler has University of Texas at Tyler. Locals can help you more with those.
Shopping, Texarkana, AR and TX, Longview, Tyler, TX and Shreveport, Louisiana will have shopping and for everything on the planet you can go into Dallas about 170 miles away.
