Came across this video today and was appalled. The comments are filled with people thanking him for “exposing” the flaws of Canada’s democracy and the superiority of China’s “people’s democracy”. Rings a bell for that New Zealand twitter propagandist that does the same thing. My question is, A. Is the whole situation completely staged by the CCP, comments and all? B What causes these Westerners to make these videos? Is it a type of deal to escape charges for expats under criminal investigation? Is there a big financial incentive? People will say he’s just a Communist, but most internet Communists I come across tend to be highly critical of Dengism and the modern system in China for abandoning its Marxist roots. I don’t think the answer is that simple.
The CCP has all kind of ways to make people do things for them.
1. Money talks. Offer people enough money and they will say anything you want them to say.
2. Intimidation. Want to stay and do videos in China? Better do what we say or else.
3. Sex. The CCP often uses Chinese women to control foreigners with sex.
4. Holding family hostage. This works against Chinese who live overseas but still have family in China. Say what we want you to say or your family will suffer.
He makes valid points throughout the video. Some people have a terrible time accepting that other nations are doing many things better than the USA. Scoreboard shows that the Chinese have been thriving in recent decades, and if they haven't already overtaken the USA they soon will. Instead of criticizing videos such as his, we should be looking at what we can improve upon.
China is not a democracy by any stretch of the imagination. They are a one party totalitarian dictatorship. I’m Canadian, this man saying the Chinese system is more of a “people’s rule” than ours is pure propaganda, straight from the CCP’s mouth. He’s either being paid or blackmailed, the question isn’t whether that’s happening, it’s which of the two.
He mentions "people's democracy," which is a specific concept found in Marxist-Leninist ideology. It is not democracy as the western world has come to understand things.
China has no shortage of paid propagandist in other countries, and an entire army in there country that do nothing more than feed pro-Chinese messages into western social media. We have seen it here in the forum.
But this guy may truly believe what he says. There are many that truly believe that the means (loss of freedom, authoritative government, government surveillance) justifies the ends (the relative success and prosperity of China over the last several decades).
There is no "peoples democracy", saying it does not make it so. It's actually a mistranslation of the western word and concept in the Chinese and other far east languages. Simply enough, "rule by the people" got translated into "ruler of the people". That's why you see the word "democracy" in some of these countries that are just the opposite. North Korea's formal title is "The Democratic Peoples Republic of North Korea". It's not a version of democracy, it's not democracy at all in any stretch of the definition.
As I always tell people, words only have the meaning that we give them. Even if one has a problem with the term “peoples democracy,” the Chinese will be the first to tell you that they don’t have a western democracy or anything close to it. And we all knew the purpose of the video, which is why the OP was rather strange to me in focusing on “democracy” as the guy in the video was simply stating his preference for China’s government system over certain others.
As an aside, I have also found that people see democracy and automatically think of certain freedoms that are common with the idea of western democratic societies. When, in reality, democracy can be the very opposite of personal freedom and can be horribly repressive if that is what the majority wants.
