If you look at statistics Manila and the Philippines is very safe.
Alot safer then other popular tourist attractions like Thailand, Jamaica etc.
Think their murder rate is at 7 per 100,000 people, compare that to Thailand which has the double, and Jamaica you'll have to double the murder rate for Thailand.
But, then you can always question the validity of these stats released by the Filipino government,
actually when you take a close look at their crime reports apparently 95% of all crimes committed there are being solved by the police. That ranks their police force as the best in the world by far!

So I would say you shouldn't trust their statistics and it's probably not as safe as statistics say.
And keep in mind that they're not used to tourists as much there as the rest of SE Asia, which makes you as a tourist a hotter target than their own population.

Still, I wouldn't hesitate to go there, if you have some streetsmarts and are not scared you'll be fine.
Remember when in evil/dark places, try to act like you belong. Don't look people in the eye, but don't look away either, you know where I'm going with this right?

I've lived here for 5 years and have had zero problems. Just don't try to change money on the street, don't wear expensive jewelry, basically don't lead people into temptation. And for goodness sake stay out of the red light districts -- you are just asking for trouble.

Manila is very safe in the main areas. Just be careful about how you travel and use a taxi at night. Manila really is a wonderful city with alot of fun and excitement alway going on.
