Philippines is like no other country in Asia. It very much resembles Latin America infused with American influences.

No Asian country comes close to being as friendly and hospitable as Filipinos. They also know how to have the most fun and cut loose better than any other Asian country.

Philippines is a breathe of fresh air and a true gem in Asia.

Thailand def wins when it comes to food though.

You'd think that as Catholics the Filipino people wouldn't cut loose as much as the Buddhist Thais (the concerns about sinning).

I'm with Kent, not sure what you're saying. They are much more reserved in comparison. Filipinos don't "cut loose" as much as Thais. And the ones that do "sin" are ostracized much more.

Seldom can you find such hospitable people who enjoy the company of their Western visitors. Perhaps due to their long association with Spain, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.

Francis spoke at length about birth control and population, issues that arose in the Philippines, where the local Church opposes a government law making contraceptives easily available.

“Some think, excuse me if I use the word, that in order to be good Catholics, we have to be like rabbits - but no,” he said, adding the Church promoted “responsible parenthood”.

He mentioned a woman he recently met who already had seven children by caesarean sections and put her life at risk by becoming pregnant again. He said he chided her for “tempting God” and added: “That was an irresponsibility.”

Agreed. Or been to the Philippines, or been to a bar in the Philippines? Or been to a party in the Philippines?

Filipinos enjoy life, no question about it. The Latin influence is certainly there.

Transfer the words, "Brazilians don't know how to cut loose because of their Catholicism", and a person can see how questionable that sounds.

Filipinos are basically a Latin / American mix of culture. No way in hell Thais can come close to partying and cutting loose and general laid back open friendly atmosphere.

A little bit of tequila and a few dead presidents floating around will make the Pope "party like it was 1999" all over again too.

*For the record, I have never partied it up in either Bangkok or Makati whilest under the influence of Señor Tequila y sus hermanos...

'cept maybe once.
