I'll be flying into KL, and thinking of a good beach that is very popular with restaurants, maybe some beach bars, and if possible, maybe even had bungalows or something within close proximity to the beach.

Does anything like that exist somewhat near Kuala Lumpur?

Port Dickson is the closest to KL, but that is still 1-1.5 hours away. But it is the muddy side of the country (Strait of Malacca). Better to get on a bus and head east to Kuantan. The trip takes 3 1/2 hours with 3 hours of riding and 1/2 hour stop halfway for toilet break.

There are great beaches north and south of Kuantan. You can spend a lot, or a little. Cherating is popular with the foreign backpacker crowd and only 40 minutes north of Kuantan.

Thanks for posting on here.

I inquired on the 'thailand vs malaysia' thread, as wasn't sure anyone was following this thread.

You've certainly posted some great info over there.

Kuantan particularly sounds interesting. Even moreso as you mentioned it is popular among Indian and CHinese Malaysians, as I was thinking of visiting during August (Ramada). Cherating equally sounds interesting, now that you mention it is only 40 minutes north! So, they are both easy to go to, one after the other.

Is Cherating kind of similar to a vibe you'd get in Thailand with its beaches? Meaning, beach bars and bungalows on the beach and such?

I have been to Cherating but not for an overnight stay. There are backpacker places, but I doubt that there is a big party scene ala Thailand. Any places serving alcohol would have to be under Chinese/Indian management, or else an int'l place serving int'l clientele. Still, it should do for a few days vacation. I know that the Hyatt in Kuantan has a beach bar, but I don't know of other places located ON a beach. I think that beachside development is limited, which is okay by me.

But the islands are a different story. On islands, there are bungalows and restaurants right on the beach. Pulau Perhentian Kecil, PP Besar, Pulau Kapas, Pulau Redang, and Pulau Tioman all have that kind of beach vibe.

You might try the Thorn Tree, Lonely Planet's online site for traveler's info on places in Cherating.

Hmm..those islands look like something I'll have to research. Yeah, maybe time to hit the bookstore, or thorntree.
