This might be a silly question but I know the Chinese avoid the number 4 because it sounds so much like the word for death. Why not just change the way 4 is pronounced? To me that would be easier than trying to avoid a number.

Its not the pronunciation people avoid but the character for "4" is the same as death. It's not any different from the US where we skip the 13th floor in elevators and such.
The elevators in China, Korea, etc skip the 4th floor.

Depending on how it sound , the digits are interchangable. For a simple elaborate - the number four can be neutralised if you add another digit in front of it i.e. 54 - it actually sounds like won't die in the art of Fung Shui pratice.

The numerical pratice aslo depends on pratically who you are and what you do - 4 is a good number if you are a professional assassin.

The Good. Bad and Ulgy counting number depending on the variance. Some Chinese avoid 7 because it is an odd number and also 7 is associated with the month where the Ghosts are being released on that single day once a year. The combination number of 714 is considered a cursed number as it is also translated into sure to die!

Good numerical numbers generally are 1 - first in line , 8 - prosper 9 - longevity.

Single digit or max digits of 8, from 8 to 8888 has fetch record prices of car registration auspicious numbers in Hong Kong to Singapore , Malaysia to China where it is auctioned off by the govt.

To be honest,4 for death doesn't affect people's mind that much.

Only a few people still hold this view.

And chinese has a complicated system ,such as Yi Jing(the bible of changes) to decide if it is a good sign or bad.

Then 4's pronounce isn't perfectly like the that of the death word. And it's hard to change the tradition.
