I cannot think of two places in the world that are less alike than Vegas and Macao. Remove the Casino districts, and it would be like comparing Bakersfield, California, with Ponce, Puerto Rico.

agree with trimac. spent my high school years in vegas, absolutely hated the place. the only positive thing in my mind compared to macau is better restaurant options/food, and better value accomodation. i don't go to macau very often, but have been there a few times. like it a lot there. i'm not into casinos at all, so that's not important to me. the OP had a post regarding saunas earlier (seemed to be copypasta from another site tho) and those are world class in macau. overall the city is too expensive for my budget unfortunately. if i made good money it would be near the top of my list of travel destinations, but as things stand i can go thru an entire avg monthly budget in under a week there

Macau is my go to place when I'm in Hong Kong and tired of people speaking loudly in cell phones that work in the subway. I don't go for casinos though, I love walking about and seeing the meditteranean architecture and seeing people of different races talking to each other in Portuguese. Oh I also go for the good Macanese and Portuguese food.
Vegas is too contrived but fun for 1-2 days and you hve to be in a mood to enjoy the tacky and contrived.

Vegas - It is nice to walk around to see the glitz of casinos and the gambling ambience is different feel with each casinos. For buffet, it should be the best in selection and price whereas fine dining food would be better than Macau. I was even legally married here!
Street food sucks over here and you cant walk around to see anything because of the heat. Walk 3 blocks and that was it.
Macau - it is nice to walk either at night or daylight. Historical old building and eateries add to the charms of Macau. Gambling experience is .....well Chinese style. Simple bets to win from traditional games. Patrons here paly simple games to win instead of having good times as well. Street food is wunderbar.

I feel Macau has a lot more history than Hong Kong. HK was a tiny fishing village when the British came, in contrast to historic cities like Hangzhou or Xian, which have histories going back thousands of years. Macau is one of the few places in China where you can see a lot of European colonial history, others include HK of course, Xiamen (Amoy), Shanghai and Qingdao. I find the mix interesting.

Been to both...Macau is lame compared to Las Vegas with respect to the Casino scene. But yes, in other aspects such as culture Macau is more interesting. I went to the Venetian in Macau and was completely unimpressed.. the one in Vegas is 100x better.

Yeah I still think Monte Carlo and Macau still do not compare to Vegas in terms of sheer scale. All this talk about Macau overtaking Vegas in revenue from gambling means nothing. For pure gambling Vegas cannot be beaten, but Macau is the better place to visit overall.

Vegas just seems like a tacky disneyland.
Macau is an actual city with a lot of history, community, etc. Macau is way better.
