Everyone has heard of Bali and I'll definitely check it out on a trip to Indonesia. But what are some other areas to visit in Indonesia and why? Beautiful areas? Interesting areas? Nice beaches? Decent food and accommodations? I'm a American guy 42 years old looking to get away for a while. How safe are other areas outside Bali?

Unfortunately although very beautiful and culturally interesting, a lot of Indonesia isn't that accessible for the average tourist.

Next to Bali is the somewhat less touristy but equally interesting Lombok, which is Muslim, and includes a active volcano.

I personally would love to visit Sumatra one day, the rainforest, Lake Toba...Sulawesi and Irian Jaya would be amazing but it would be hard to visit I think.

From Singapore some places are quite accessible, Batam is very close to Singapore.

Java seems quite ignored by tourists but has a lot to see actually.

Minahasa in North Sulawesi.

I reckon there's an international airport in Manado, its capital.

I've spent time on both Java and Bali.

In Java, I went to Jakarata, Bogor, Bandung, Malang, Yogjakarta, and probably a couple other places I can't quickly recall at the moment.

I also went to the more popular areas of Bali - Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud, Lembongan Island, etc.

I MUCH MUCH MUCH preferred BALI. Just an absolutely beautiful island, with a very rich culture and you have a great mix of things from beaches to the beauty of Ubud. I'd go back there again and again in a mini-heartbeat.

Java was a lot of fun, especially Jakarta. But, one month in Java, and I have no desire to go back. There are many things to see there as well.

I often hear great things about Lombok. Very little traffic there, and just quiet and relaxing, etc. Also I've heard many interesting things about Sumutra as well.

It's amazing just how big and varied Indonesia is though. It feels like it could take you 6 months to really get to know all the corners and nuisances of place in that country.

Thanks for the feedback Tiger, it sounds like Bali is the place I should focus on. Everyone I have every met that has gone to Bali speaks glowingly of it. I was just checking to see if there were any other Bali-like parts of Indonesia that are lesser known. At this point in my life I'm not up for the super roughing it adventuresome traveling of my 20's. I still like off the beaten track places and adventure, but not too rough

Even though Bali is touristic, it certainly deserves to be visited. Gorgeous and unique place.

Lombok seems to be most touted as the closest to what Bali use to be. Take in mind though, that Lombok is Muslim, whereas Bali isn't Muslim. So kind of a muslim version of what Bali use to be.

That being said, I like what Bali is right now, and I have no reference of comparison to really know what Bali use to be.

I also loved Bali. A lot. Ubud was fantastic. As soon as I got there I felt the serenity of the place and the mellow happiness of the Balinese. Just loved it.

I went to Seminyak for a few days too but didn't like it as much. It didn't have that serenity. Instead it was congested and noisy with not as much of the Balinese culture evident like it was in Ubud. People told me the shopping was great in Seminyak but I preferred Ubud for that as I wasn't after cheap t-shirts or pirated DVDs. I like walking through small villages near Ubud and stopping at an artist's hut by a rice paddy to watch him paint and have a chat. And buy one of his originals. I'd go back to Bali any day, but to Ubud or some other similar-paced village.

I'm not surprised that everybody said Bali. I loved it too.
There are other great areas too, though you cannot compare them to Bali.
I personally fell in love in the area I mentioned before: Minahasa in northern Sulawesi.
Ambon was also really beautiful, though when I went there seven years ago you could still see the aftermaths of the civil war.
One of my dreams is to explore eastern Indonesia.
