It says on wikipedia that this island may contain significant oil and natural gas reserves, is there any other reason besides this that makes China, Brunei, Vietnam, Philippines, Malasya and Taiwan dispute this Island?
Is there any conflict or military fights between those countries related to the dispute of Spratly Islands?
Chinese warships sunk a Vietnamese naval transport back in the 80s. That's the only thing that comes to mind that resulted in the loss of life. Fishing rights also play a big role. A large chunk of the world's commercial fishing catch was in the South China Sea.
China's and Taiwan's(ROC) claims are based on the same historical reasons.
They are regarded as part of the Chinese Empire by the Ming & Qing dynasties(in the same way as Tibet and Xinjiang), with some lose control, and some Chinese historians said it was included as early as the Han dynasty.
In the same way they both claim the Diaoyu Islands, which is disputed with Okinawa of Japan.
nobody is trying to claim all the islands except for China
I was a little confused, because it seems that each country has some islands there, but I don´t know which of them has the islands with Oil and Gas, so the confusion is because China is claiming all of the islands or because one country has all the islands with oil and gas?
