Generally speaking, Asian youths growing up in Western countries do not care so much about being white unless their parents are very conservative.

I'm not talking about Korean Australians, but Korean uni students and those on working holiday visas.

A more interesting question would be, "why is tan skin popular with white people?"

I've heard it was because it was a sign of wealth, because wealthy people had time to spend time doing leisure activities outdoors and attain a nice tan. Coco Chanel was apparently one of the first style icons to sport a tanned look.

Well they realized being pale doesn't make you look good and it doesn't look healthy like you are so anemic and weak. Also when you wear a bikini, you wouldn't look so sexy at all... And I agree, a tanned woman in a bikini looks more sexy and hot than a pale woman in a bikini.

Guess for me in Japan that would be Kyushu and Shikoku since I'm a Type III borderline Type II.

Some people just can't get that nice golden tan, it's genetics. Perhaps they shouldn't even bother tanning.
