I've heard it was because it was a sign of wealth, because wealthy people had time to spend time doing leisure activities outdoors and attain a nice tan. Coco Chanel was apparently one of the first style icons to sport a tanned look.

Well they realized being pale doesn't make you look good and it doesn't look healthy like you are so anemic and weak. Also when you wear a bikini, you wouldn't look so sexy at all... And I agree, a tanned woman in a bikini looks more sexy and hot than a pale woman in a bikini.

Some people just can't get that nice golden tan, it's genetics. Perhaps they shouldn't even bother tanning.
