I came across a Japanese term once which was used to describe the value or quality obtained by something as it ages over time. Its analogous to the term "patina" which a metal item might obtain as it ages, but more general in that the term could be applied to any object. Any suggestions what this term might be? (anglicized version if possible)

my wife (nihon-gin) cannot think of any word that equals patina (which can either add value, or for a rusting vehicle detract from same).

it is not sabi....which has more the concept of style or refinement (she does not use that word however )

the process of aging or getting older would be said simply as
'"toshi wo toru" (age gain.....in japanese verb is always last - so translated would be to gain age).

the word for value is "kachi" (if you wanted to add the concept of increasing value or decreasing it with age)
