As for little known Asian Countries maybe look west? Armenina and Bahrain are two that spring to my mind, they are both Geographically in Asia.
Armenia and Georgia, though geographically in Asia, these countries align themselves politically with Europe, and are generally considered European. Their cultural landscapes also resonate with Europe more than Asia.

Bhutan, Brunei....Singapore and HK are both really small landwise, though.

Most Europeans are familiar with it... Lots of Europeans when I was there, esp French and Germans.

Nagaland, which is nominally a state of India (on the Burmese border), but which has considerable autonomy, and acts of the Indian Parliament do not necessarily appy to Nagaland unless and until Nagaland's assembly enacts them. Nagaland consists largely of tribal factions, who at times are essentially at war with India, although peace generally prevails. Indian civilians require a special permit to enter Nagaland. Nagaland issued their own postage stamps for a while.

I wish I had gone there, but I only got as far as Tripura and Meghalaya, which also required special travel visas.
