I know prostitution exists, just that I didn't know that Japanese would come to Taiwan specifically for that. It's not like they don't have any at home or there's no cheaper options(Thailand and whatnot).

The Japanese like Taiwan.

I think it may not be what it once was:

The original destination of Japanese tourists was Taiwan, where Japanese was still spoken because Taiwan was once a colony. Group tours to Peitou hot springs near Taipei became popular because men could enjoy cheaper sex with local women, many of whom were young tribal girls from the mountains.

And this wasn't all that long ago:

History offers us the clearest mirror of ourselves. The "Erotic Guide to Taiwan" incident occurred in 2002. A Japanese language sex tourism guide book sold on Taiwan entitled the "Erotic Guide to Taiwan" openly listed information on Taiwan's sex industry. It informed Japanese “Johns” where to solicit prostitutes. As soon as the story broke, then Mayor Ma Ying-jeou was promptly excoriated by various sectors, most notably the green camp. They denounced his anti-vice campaign as ineffective. They accused him of bringing shame upon Taipei. They blamed him for undermining Taipei's international reputation. DPP Taipei City council members held a press conference and denounced this sex industry guidebook for Japanese tourists.

But, yeah, the trade is not what it once was. But, take an evening stroll around the 林森北路 area and it becomes obvious what is going on. The pubs around 雙城街 are either Western or Japanese. The girl in the Western pubs will just talk with you and drink. The girls in the Japanese pubs are "take out".

Yeah, I don't go there.

We need a red light district.

The Japanese like Taiwan because the Taiwanese like them.

Taiwan is the most pro-Japan country in the world after Japan itself.

I actually changed my mind and I now think prostitution should be strictly banned and the purchasers should be fined, aka the Swedish approach, instead of the Dutch/German approach where the sex workers are constantly being placed in an inhuman position.

Too bad Taiwanese politicians are too retarded for anything progressive.

Btw I don't think the Japanese really like Taiwan that much. The sentiment is kinda overblown.

It is interesting to see Taiwan is influenced by Japanese cultures to a very great extent.

Yet prostitution and pornography are like legal(actually not completely legal) and very open in Japan but not in Taiwan(only pornography is legal) . Legal situation is very similar to the US.
