On a related note a lot of those 'government approved' travel agencies are anything but.

If a tuk tuk driver offers to take you to a 'government travel agency' politely decline. If you end up going there anyway, just say outright you're not interested.

Because it's cheap and exotic. That's it.

You can eat very well for you and a date for $10 pretty much anywhere in Thailand. You can also stay in a nice hotel for cheap (though if you want 5* or really nice hotels rates are comparable).

So basically I could fly into Bankok for ~$2000 where I live, then not have to spend my child's college fund to have a blast, nor would I have to hold back on spending money as much as other places.

Compare that to going to Japan or Australia.

Thailand is getting more expensive, especially BKK and Phuket. Chiang Mai is still better bang for your buck. I often paid $8-10 for meals at restaurants in Patong and Bangkok.

True, but the Thai politicians are the biggest crooks. Once they get into political office they all milk it for the money prestige and the power. Forget about serving the people they represent or doing things that benefit the country. There is no systems of checks and balances and no system of accountability so everyone gets away with everything.

Interesting! But being a Filipino, I'll bet the Thais are not the only ones who do that. We in the Philippines are quite similar to the Thais in that regard!

It's easier to name the countries where this is NOT the case.

I doubt that as the Thai people I knew were friendly in some way but still when I tried to get to know them I figured out they were quite reserved.
