My experiences (having traveled to Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong and Guangzhou many times):

Chinese: materialistic, loud, do not follow rules well, sometimes do not see the big picture, warm and hospitable, hard working and industrious

Japanese: well mannered, polite, follow directions, reserved (until you get to know them), not afraid to ask personal questions, very literal in thinking, restrained in temperament, very businesslike, hardworking and industrious

Korean: hot tempered, always afraid to "lose face" and cannot lose, determined and strong willed, do not see the big picture in certain situations, nationalistic, stubborn and unyielding, only usually associate with other Koreans, hardworking and industrious

China may have a few similarities with France.

(1) Both have relatively rich history and culture, and have deeply influenced other nations around. There are lot of French loanwords in English and German. Over 50% words in Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese have Chinese origin.

(2) Both are famous for food. French cuisine dominates the western world. Chinese way of cooking influenced other Asian countries too.

(3) Neither is very good at a fighting (in recent history). France lost to Germany and China lost to Japan etc. Interestingly, France lost a war to China too, and it is the only western country having lost to China in recent history.

(4) Both had endless revolutions in recent history. Both eliminated monarchy.

Well I was talking about temperament... I don't see how similar Chinese' character to French, Koreans - Italians and Taiwanese - Portuguese.

People are shaped by culture and history, so you have to look for answers there. Nothing was born with.
