A study comparing people born before and after China's 'one child' policy in 1979 finds the younger group to be not as trusting, conscientious or inclined to compete or cooperate with others. For those of you that have been to China, do you agree or disagree with this assessment?
I have worked with the older generation and the "not as trusting, conscientious or inclined to cooperate with others" is common. I haven't worked with the younger generation, but hope it is not worse. I have a friend whose opinion is that these are traits that were lost during the Cultural Revolution (rather than the One Child Policy as this article suggests). As for the "not inclined to compete", I don't think that can be found in the younger generation. Aren't they actually under intense pressure to be extremely competitive? Just remembered an article how they train Chinese Olympians, and that is beyond tiger parenting. I certainly will not blame the kids if they are "not inclined to compete" in that kind of environment.
