I just notice a general trend among Japanese to 'go with the group', to agree with the concensus. To not question it.
Showing off your intellectual ability just seems like something Japanese would not desire to do. It makes you stand out, it makes you different, it makes you appear to think you're better/smarter/more intellectual than another.
Tying back to the previous conservation. I think a Japanese potential wife might want to BE educated, but not necessarily show herself off as 'intellectual'. It kind of goes against their cultural grain.
