Thailand became the world's largest exporter of rice while the Philippines became the world's largest importer of rice for some years despite the International Rice Research Institute being located in the Philippines. Both corruption and natural disasters (specially typhoons) are equally to blame for that.
And massive population growth for the Philippines which has considerably less land than Thailand does while having a much larger population means the Philippines is going to have to be considerably more efficient at using and managing their land cultivation.

Thank god that the Phils is like it is.
When you wanna get away from the normal life, the Philippines is the way to go.
You just never know what's going to happen to you next while walking the streets of Manila in the middle of the night..

I walked some pretty deserted streets in Bangkok at night and I didn't feel unsafe.

The Philippines finally passed the RH Bill so I can see the population growth rate dropping a lot. It's already been dropping for decades.

The Philippines isn't especially dangerous. It has a crime rate comparable to the US, and it's a third world country.

Yes, population growth rate is one of those economic factors whose disparity between that of Thailand and the Philippines is huge from 1980 to now. That's probably part of the "if history had gone differently" as it is the Catholic church who is encouraging the Filipinos to go forth and multiply.

well its not that...its just manila is a crap hole..money goes into it like a black hole

Visayas and Mindanao are vastly undeveloped to it because none of the taxes that visayans and mindanaoans pay never make it back to helping visayas and mindanao

Usually projects done in visayas and mindanao come from the local regional govt

given that I would rather live in visayas then ****hole manila

svedski is right....I feel safer walking the streets of DC compared to walking in Manila where people get killed for a cellphone

that said...people do not generalize all of the Philippines just because of Manila....Manila is more like a gangreen infected leg...or a cancer connected to the Philippines....once you seperate this cancer the rest of the country is rather delightful

If history had gone differently, Manila could be like Honolulu today. It was an overseas US territory, just like Hawaii, for the first half of the 20th century. The US pulled out of the Philippines because labor unions and big sugar wanted the protection of import taxes on goods from an independent Philippines. Their lobbyists overrode a Hoover veto.

The main reason for Thailand being more popular with tourists is the large number of foreigners that can stay virtually forever in Thailand, by making a visa run every couple of months to Malaysia. Visa runs from the Philippines have to be done by air.

I like to say that Manila is a bad ambassador for the Philippines.

What is the best largeish city in the Philippines IYO?
