Like I said, he could always send resumes and apply for jobs in HK while he is still back in the states, and if he's accepted, he could then decide whether to move there permanently and take up the job.

He could also crash in at his relatives' place (if they permit him) for a few weeks till he finds a suitable job. That would cut down his expenditure a lot. And if he fails to find one within that period, it's better for him to seek an alternative route.

If you saved some $ and plan to start a business over there...sure why not? No wife and kids, so no real risk. If things don't work out, you can return back to the States. Also, much easier if you speak the language. Some of my mother's friends returned to Vietnam in order to start a hair/nail/body salon business during the early 2000s and have never looked back. Just be sure to not use all your life savings just in case something goes wrong.

I'm not sure about those who quit their current jobs and go overseas looking for work though...probably not a good idea unless you can easily find a good paying job ahead of time.
