I have interacted with over a dozen young Iranians. ALL of them drink alcohol and many eat pork.
Their girls dress like westerners and behave that way too.
It's quite different from what US media made me believe.
In the US of A or in Iran? It makes a big difference.
Afghan society was conservative but yes the country was overall
Secular.
What's your definition of secular?
Religion permeated permeated that society, even if it might not have been Saudi Arabia it was still very far from any secularism people are used to in the west.
Well I was referring to women's rights. Starting in the 20's and up into the 70's-80's Women had a lot more freedom. They were allowed to get an education and hold professions such as being teachers, doctors, engineers etc. They were also encouraged to wear western style of clothing. Forced marriages were also made illegal. Also if I'm not mistaken the communist party held quite a bit of influence and power in the 80's. Sometimes I wonder what Afghanistan would be like today if the soviets won the war back then.
From what I've seen from any Iranian online besides the one on this thread is that they wish their country wasn't a theocracy and don't like the social police and would rather not have religion be such a part of either their lives or their society.
