All I know is, these are two cities of the world I'd love the chance to live in. More I research cities in general the shorter my list of "livable" becomes.

shinjuku is the version of nyc village, soho, tribeca areas combined. it is full of artists, jazz, young artsy crowd mixed with professionals. the best nightlife in this city which is outside of tokyo.

i have lived in tokyo and nyc. there sre some similarities but i think tokyo is far better than nyc. tokyo is super crowded but so well organized in every which way. they have amusement parks on the roofs of department stores and beer gardens everywhere. the groceries are usually in the basements or the lower level of the stores where it is cooler, there is logic in everything the japanese people do.
vending machines with cans/bottles of liquors. restaurants with wax/plastic replicates of the actual food you will be served.
so clean too. people respect their land and city and do not litter or even spit on the ground.
the japanese people love their french designers and cosmetics and they love to spend money.

i love tokyo and i love nyc but if i had to choose between the two i would pick tokyo.
