Tokyo: Asian Equivalent of Manhattan? (travel, influence, compared, time)

Tokyo is more futuristic, as exciting, and definitely safer to walk around at night. On the other hand, NY is more grand with its old architecture. I really like Tokyo and I really like Shanghai, both of which are very impressive cities. Without putting much thought into it, my first thought is that Shanghai is more comparable to New York. (as someone else has mentioned)

Tokyo is Tokyo and New York is New York.

I'd say Hong Kong is more comparable to New York (or Manhattan specifically) in terms of architecture and density of skyscrapers. HK is also known as Manhattan of the East, and it's definitely more cosmopolitan than either Tokyo or Shanghai.

Have been to both, and pretty much this.

Tokyo does not have very impressive skyscrapers due to earthquakes. Hong Kong and Shanghai have more impressive skyscrapers. Shanghai even has a similar looking Apple store as the one on 5th Avenue in New York.

In Shanghai, many residential buildings are in European styles, so it may be similar to NYC in this regard.

I do not know the enough of Tokyo or NYC (not been to all parts) to answer all of these but:

Ginza=Soho (Only been to Manhattan and Soho in NYC)

Tokyo strikes me as SO. MUCH. MORE. CROWDED! People living in little cubicles--I guess that's the future of NYC and San Francisco, too, the way things are going. But the trains in and out of Tokyo are stifling if you're on them anywhere near commute hour. I very nearly got sick on one, because I couldn't breathe.
