Asians are often stereotyped as being shorter than other groups i.e. Europeans and Africans and for some asian groups i've found that to be true on the most part, most Filipinos are quite short. However at least in North America i've noticed that the 1st generation asian North Americans are often not too dissimilar in height from their non-asian counter-parts especially the Chinese, koreans as well.

I guess i would chalk that up to improved diet? So is it just a stereotype that Asians are shorter? if not what do you think the basis for a shorter height is?

Yes. A study was done a long time ago that concluded the (once characteristic) short stature of East Asians was due to diet. Japanese in the US and Japan were studied, and it came to the conclusion you gave. Also, over generations, Japanese in Japan got taller as diet there improved. And let's not forget the Mongols and some of the other Inner Asian peoples, who tend to be tall, anyway. Maybe because dairy products (calcium) is a core part of their traditional diet...?

The way I understand is, the northern chinese are taller than the southern chinese, and it is the southern chinese who are wide spread ones, and the ones everyone sees.

I think it does have to do with the diet. I'm not so sure it's improved as far as health is concern as the American diet is usually rich in fat as well as protein. I think the diet high in protein and also the readily dairy products available in the US attributes to it as well.

One of my neighbors is Filipino and is a big basketball fan. He always talks about his kids' high school basketball team. My guess is, my neighbor is probably around 5'9" and his wife probably around 5'2" but his kids are huge compared to him. He told me his 17 yr old is 6'2" and his 15 yr old is 6'1" and still growing according to him. I don't doubt it either cause I'm 6'1" and we are eye level. Yup, I would say diet and a nurturing environment with less stress has a lot to do with it. The growth hormone is highly secreted during sleep, so it helps a lot if the kids have plenty of sleep as well.

Just look at the comparisons in this table here between adult Mexicans and adult Mexican Americans, it's a huge difference.
Human height - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adult Mexicans are 5'4" and Adult Mexican Americans are 5'7" on average

Asians and Asian Americans have gotten taller due to changes in diet and lifestyle. Still shorter than most Americans, though.

My cousin went over to Japan recently and mentioned how much taller the Japanese(men and women) were nowdays....he was comparing it to the last time he was in Japan(early 90s).

As far as in the States, my cousin's son is 12 yrs old and already 5'7". His doctor projected him to be like 6'2". My cousin is 5'6" and his wife 5'2".

Height is a genetic marker like other characteristics. Its nothing to figure out. They are short because they are suppose to be short. Its like the eyes. Asians have short heights, and unique eye shapes. They are identifiable genetic traits.

Filipinos who were raised in the US are usually much taller than their parents. I'd say they're almost the average height of Americans, but I'm not sure. I'm gonna pay closer attention

they typically are taller than native filipinos, and that's why they're becoming popular in the entertainment and sports circles in the philippines.

There's diversity in China too.
It's said in Harbin, a northeastern city, the average of young males is 178cm (5'11"). However in some rural areas of south China, it is barely 170cm (5'7").
